Yesternight I attended a concert by the "N.Y. Composers Ensemble", all were from the N.Y. university´s musical/ composition departement. Beyond the technical thoroughness displayed there, and the very clear (aural) view I could get of their sensus communis as far as their works were concerned - now I know what this "New York School" means, apart from all that I was confronted with what I deem to be one of the best things northern America means to me: Their friendly informality, w i t h o u t any slack in demanding to put absolutely everything in the performance of the slightest detail. Those elderly guys on the impromtu stage made up in a crammed up library laughed and chatted during the time they´d to rearrange the stage, fumbled with the massive electronic equipment and all in all displayed a charm completely missing usually in German concert occasions. They were deadly serious about their performance, which itself was stunning especially in that fascinating interfacing of electronic instruments and fl,bars, dr,dance,voice, and at the same time they conveyed the strong feeling that you could have a beer with them anytime right away. It impressed me very much, that casualness hand in hand with utter artistic relentnessness - I am grateful to once more experienced this what I take as American in the best sense.
