 Stravinsky Octet
Author: Robert Moody
Date:   2005-03-16 19:30

We are performing the Stravinsky Octet in April and I do not have the part in front of me. The question is...

Is there a section where the bass clarinet is used in the clarinet part? I've seen the Bb and A sections.

We were listening to a recording today and it sounds like there is a bass clarinet playing. Not only that, but it sounds like the bass clarinet is playing at the same time the clarinet is. (The bass clarinet player really leaked air on the recording and that was disappointing for such a good group. I believe they were the Detroit Wind Players or Symphony or something.)

Thanks in advance for those who know and share.

FYI for those who do not know, the instrumentation is Flute, Clarinet, 2 Bassoons, 2 Trumpets and 2 Trombones.

Looking at the part....I see nothing for bass clarinet at all. I wonder if maybe they substituted a bass clarinet for one of the bassoons or something. ???

Sure, I bet we could move you to Korea or something! Ha Ha! :)

Actually, Korea's not bad at all. You'll have fun.

More precisely: Flute, Clarinet in Bb, 2 Bassoons, Trumpet in C, Trumpet in A, Tenor Trombone and Bass Trombone.

I didn't have the score, but checked in Eric Walter White's book, "Stravinsky: The Composer and his Works".

No mention of bass clarinet.

BTW - There are some revisions in the 1952 version (Boosey & Hawkes), from the original 1924 edition...GBK

Perhaps low clarinet plus bassoon sounds like bass clarinet on that recording?

Combined instruments have been known to do stranger things.

Dear Robert...

Which recording of the Stravinsky are you using for study? I too have a recording but with the New York Woodwind Quintet and have not heard anything remotely like a Bass clarinet in it..on top of this I have performed it and nowhere does Stravinsky indicate anything about a bass clarinet

I will have to ask to borrow the recording for the information. If I can remember to get it, I will clip and excerpt out of it and put it up for you all to hear. Who knows? Maybe I was just hearing something odd in a bassoon or trombone sound. [frown].

I swear it sounded like a bass clarinet as I listened.

As you get older, the ears are the second thing to go.

We all know what the first thing is. [wink] ...GBK
