Alto Ligature on Clarinet Mouthpiece?

I've just joined a clarinet trio, and I'm trying to get a setup that sounds pretty good, but is affordable. One thing I noticed is that I can take my Vandore Optimum ligature from my alto sax (which is my main instrument) and fit it on the clarinet mouthpiece. Is this an ok thing to do, or am I adversely affecting response/tone?

Also, I'm trying to find a mouthpiece that I can use with the #3 vandoren traditional reeds I use. I'm fairly comfortable with this strength, but the mpiece I play on pretty bad to say the least. I've been looking around this bbs, and I see that the b45 is fairly popular. My only concern is that this may be too open for me. Any suggestions on mouthpieces would be greatly appreciated.

Generally a slightly open mouthpiece, like the B45, is recommended for reeds of this strength. With a more closed mouthpiece, the reed may contact the mouthpiece too long during the vibration cycle and be very hard to play. If you wish to use something less open, then you might want to think about working up to a slightly harder reed.

Dee's comment is right on point, as always. In response to your question about using an alto sax ligature on a clarinet mpce, so long as the alto ligature is small enough to hold the reed securely and doesn't bind the reed on the sides, it will be fine. It works the other way, too. I have a Hite alto mpce which is a slim profile, almost like a metal mpce, and requires a clarinet ligature. Standard alto ligs are too big for it.

Since alto is your main horn, let me renew my pitch for the Hite Premiere clarinet mpce. It has a tip opening of 0.043", which is the tip often recommended for sax players doubling on clarinet. It sells at a bargain basement price and is a great all around mpce. Your Vandoren #3s should work well with it.
