The Clarinet BBoard

I went to a repair shop to get a misplaced key fixed and they wouldn't repair it because they said it was a CSO because they weren't familiar with the brand. The brand is Atlantis if anybody has any info on it. But my parents are now convinced to buy me a new clarinet with a brand such as selmer, yamaha, buffet and etc... Since I live in Canada I went to a shop and went to the clarinet section and I couldn't believe how expensive a B-flat R-13 was...3,100 dollars. Is this reasonable?
Do you have any suggestions on reasonably priced *wooden clarinets? I've been thinking about an E-11 buffet from the remarks of owners of it. And I've also been looking at some of the yamaha's recently.
Thanks. (and reasonably priced as in aprox. 1000 and below in canadian dollars. Usually everything in Canada is double the price the u.s. has to pay!)

I believe that when you first posted about having bought the "Atlantis" clarinet, many people responded about it being a CSO and warned about potential problems. As we have said NUMEROUS times, clarinets like Atlantis (and many others that are similar) will often be refused by repair techs...GBK

sorry to hear about your clarinet faux pas. if you intend on sticking with the instrument, a Buffet E11 is a good intermediate clarinet. they are built of wood, so a little extra care is required. opinions will vary as to what is **best** so just look for a reliable, well-known brand that has a manufacturer that will back it's product. Yamaha, Buffet, even Selmer.
IF you are truly serious about playing clarinet look into investing in a nice professional instrument, but hang on to an old plastic model for marching band and pep band.
It is not unusual to pay around $1200-2500 on a good instrument. (USdollars) {or more!}

Ditto with the apologies. I recently bought a Brand New E-11 for $600 U.S. If you want to get a low price go to www.ardsleymusic.com. I have bought two instruments from them, and they are both impeccable.

Oh..thanks. This is my second year playing the clarinet and will be playing it for quite a while considering I will be studying it in univeristy.
But personally, I don't like buying stuff online because I'm afraid I might be scammed and I don't like giving away credit card info over the internet (if you know what I mean).

WWBW is $673 (I got delivery on one today) for the E-11.
You can always order it on the phone from them or another dealer.
Morrie Backun (a top clarinet repairman in Vancouver) likes the Jupiter Wooden Clarinet. You may want to consider that instead of the E-11 as Morrie raves about that instrument.

I called a music store recently and said that an E-11 is 758 dollars. I think I might go for that offer. Cause if do buy the E-11 I want it to last until university. Then get a job and buy an r-13 =P.

judging from the sales on ebay....you can get an R-13 for about $800 american....and most are usually ready to play. Too bad though since the R-13 is worth more than that....but the market is soft. So buyers are winners....check out ebay. If you need assistance in buying....contact me offline....or any of the others here that know what they're talking about....

To be honest, I wouldn't limit myself to wooden clarinets. There have been many favorable threads about NON-wooden clarinets right in your pricerange that have been phenominal. Do some searches on "TR147" or "TR-147", "Bundy resonite", "forte clarinet" and bunch of others I can't think of right now (running on an empty tank, need to sleep and refuel my energy for tomorrow . . . )
But if you are interested in primarily professional level clarinets, a good used wooden one can be found for that price. Mine was that price. And it's a used professional clarinet. And in my opinion, it plays EXTREMELY well.

I don't know where the original poster is located, other than being in Canada. I do know that there are a ton of good used pro model clarinets in the Toronto area (where I live.)
Another poster mentioned the Jupiter wood clarinet. I have one of these as a backup to my Selmer 10S. The only thing I don't like about it is that is feels too much like a Buffet! (you get used to the larger holes on Selmers.)
As for buying online, I agree I'm somewhat hesitant about that with clarinets.
What I do know is that many of the sponsors in the instruments section here on woodwind.org are located in Canada. At least one in BC, two in the Toronto area.
bflatclarinetist - you should have know trouble getting the horn you want if you just look at what's available.

Tom Ridenour no longer has the TR-147, he's now selling a similar hard rubber clarinet under the name "Arioso." I recently purchaced an Arioso C clarinet and am pleased with it. It is a well made instrument, has good intonation, and good key placement. The price is very resonable considering the quality of the instrument.
These can be ordered directly from Tom. It was quite an experience talking to him. He's extremely knowledgeable about clarinets and seems to enjoy sharing his knowledge. He said he had helped design the Leblanc Concerto and Opus clarinets, among others. He designed the Arioso instruments. They are made in China.

if you are looking for a pro, I highly reccomend a buffet r-13. mine was $1800 (USD)- brand new (or so they said...though all the tenon corks were flat and dark brown, there seemed to be a chip in the upper section I hadn't noticed, and the upper section pads needed replacing, which was about $150-200...with a few other things thrown in)
but anyway, that's my two cents!
p.s. it was about $3000 list price...not sure what that means, but obviously it wasn't selling for that much. maybe that's what your number was??

I bought a Leblanc Noblet on ebay, and I like it very much. Haven't checked lately, but last I did you could get one for not over $200.
