Just wondering. I've heard time and time again of how wonderful string ligatures are, but seem to only notice them being marketed for soprano clarinets. Why not saxes? Or bass clarinets? Or maybe people out there DO use them, but I just haven't heard about it. Just curious.

I've been using a traditionally wrapped string ligature since the day in 1998 when I played a joint concert with the Luftwaffenmusikkorps 2 (German Air Force Band) in Karlsruhe, Germany. Backstage, the German clarinet player sitting next to me grabbed my clarinet from me, wrapped it and a few seconds later - out on stage we went. I was a little concerned but happily it worked great the entire concert with no 're-wraps' and I haven't looked back since. As far as using it on other clarinets, I was playing Eb in our clarinet quartet back then in Heidelberg, Germany and using the string ligature and so was our bass clarinet player. Worked great for us! We even called ourselves the "Schnur Quartet"!

how i miss the jam session at "Cave" (plus classic funk night), and Hoernchen (they even had a CD of NZ music there for when i was homesick)... but i was never able to find a woodwind specialist store....

I own a "braided" string ligature. I've also wound my own using a couple of different kinds of 'string". I know of one associate who was gung ho on string last year but has reverted to a conventional one. In my opinion either do it yourself wound or woven types are used by a minority of players who absolutely love them. The rest of us don't like the "hassle" or have other reasons, founded or unfounded, not to use them.

I often use string ligature on soprano clarinet. Recently, I have used a string ligature when playing bass clarinet and loved it.

I use a pyne handwoven string ligature. I like it because it is really easy to use (it just slides right on) and I am able to produce a bigger, fuller sound when I use it. The only problem I have with is a SLIGHT stuffyness when playing tough articulation parts, but other than that it's great.
AAHHH!
