 The Results are IN!!
Author: John Stackpole

With "Personal Inferiority" about to go off the bottom of the topics page, it seemed time to do a quick summary...

38 people responded (Thank you!)

They own, or have access to, 307 clarinets. (I didn't count saxes, recorders, or any other instrument)

Thats an average of 8.08 cls per person

And a Standard Deviation of 8.10 cls

The max was GBK with 37(!)

The min was four of us with only 1 each.

Question: Are other instrumentalists as nuts or as possessive?

Surely the average (professional, I presume) tubists (tubaists?, players of tubas, anyway) surely don't own 8 tubas!

Does Alicia de Larrocha own 8 grand pianos?

Did Toscaninni own 8 batons?

At a PSO benefit recital (Brass section) George Vosburgh, principal trumpet of the Pittsburgh symph told us he has 50 trumpets (incl posthorn, flugelhorns, various pitch trumpets, etc)

At a Rolling Stones concert I saw that Keith Richards had 7 elec. guitars on stage lined up. Probably the tip of the iceberg.

I don't know how many batons Arturo T had, but he had a pocket watch that he placed on the stand, and he said to the orch. "This piece will be 12min and 22 seconds, ...and it WAS!" (told to me by clarinet teacher who recorded with him)

poor person with the .08th of a clarinet! [tongue]

I know this guy who collects vintage guitars...he has like 40. I dont understand why anyone needs 37 clarinets, but hey, it's more fun that way!

The person with 0.08 clarinet actually only owns a box of reeds, right now.

He's gonna get a mouthpiece when he gets the money together.

Then a barrel, then .... &c.

I never got to post on that, but here's what I've got...wouldn't change the numbers much...
2 B-flats (an old Noblet and a plastic Vito)
On loan from the school: a Selmer E-flat
Also: a trumpet (Marceau of Bohemia? Don't know. There's no serial number or anything), and an alto sax (a brand called Wolverine, made by Grinnell Brothers in Detroit).

John - regarding the size of a typical (?) tuba collection, see http://www.bassethoundmusic.com/hardware.htm

-----------

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

sheesh! all those clarinets out there...
well, here are my 2 cents:
one very good Vintage R-13 Buffet.
one do-able plastic Bundy (i started on this one)
one Keilwerth alto Sax
one Selmer tenor sax
two flutes (one good, one passable)
one Alvarez bass guitar
one violin
a couple kazoos :)
one misplaced recorder
three birds, a cat, a turtle and a fish
oops, sorry got carried away.
and that is all

aren't musicians great?!

OK this will help build up the average.
5 in Bb all play
4 in A only one plays well, 3 are antiques
1 effer it plays
1 alto in pieces
2 bass one plays lots better then the other

A great teacher gives you answers to questions
you don't even know you should ask.

GBK has 37 Clarinets... Yikes, I'll never be able to catch up with him! I do understand why, our instrument is indeed a work of art and there are so many types and vintages out there that enough really never is. I also have many watches and fountain pens, do I need them all? Yes!

My clarinets (and saxophone, flutes, recorders) have been bought, traded for, acquired from colleagues, etc... over a 40 year period. Often, you just have to be in the right place at the right time.

All are played (although not every week) and each has a distinct "personality". I am sure, like many of you, the instruments are just like having a group of good friends.

BTW - one of my adult students collects cameras. He has more than 60...GBK

Of woodwind horns
some have many
honks and squeaks
they are aplenty

Spares and backups
and must-haves
abound
if you have excess mouths
(not to mention the mouthpieces and barrels)
only one horn need be found

Now I must confess
that on my shelf
two double sets and two eefers
I have come to pocess

Add to these
a few saxaphones
and the collection is complete
No wait!!
I want yet another , he moans.

No, but you can bet that she owns at least 2 if not 3. Sax players often have many, many of them also as well do flutists.

I collect dollars, I have at least 50 of them........ ;)
