I had an enquiry from a parent who wishes to purchase a new clarinet for her son, currently doing 2nd grade with a hand-me-down instrument that is badly in need of replacement. She wants an instrument which will last him through high school.
I have not been impressed with the quality of new intermediate Buffet instruments (E11's) and recently started teaching a student who has a new Yamaha 450 Bb, which appeared far better constructed and blows a very centred concert A440. They are both similarly priced (in Australia).
Any comments on the merits of intermediate Yamaha's vs Buffet?
Thanks,

I have an E-11. I started with it back in fourth grade. All the while, it just seemed like any other clarinet. When I had it fixed up just before high school (and bought a cheap plastic one for marching), the sound was totally different, much better. Even more, when I bought a Clark Fobes mouthpiece (I tried three before deciding on my favorite and sent the other two back) it played great. My only comment for this clarinet is that it seems pitched a little low. Before I warm it up, it will actually play a touch flat. The plastic clarinet always starts sharp. This and the bottom line e has a sort of buzz to it. The alternate fingering for Bb in the upper register doesn't like to come out very well. Open G's and A's may not always be quite in tune with the rest of the instrument. This is my personal clarinet and is most likely characteristic only to it. But seeing as you asked for comments on the particular model I happen to own, I decided to reply.

With the manufacturer's barrel (64.5mm) the E-11 is designed to play at A=442...GBK

Thanks, heh... I was thinking maybe I should get a new barrel... Now I will for sure.
