Un-thought of modifications to leather lig
Author: sfalexi

Or at least, not yet discussed modifications.

The ligature style in question here is the simple leather ligature. Think Rovner or perhaps even BG.

I've yet to try it, but I've thought about simply sticking various materials between the leather and the clarinet reed. I mean, when you think about it, there IS a bit of room before you tighten it down. So who's to say that you can't stick some metal, or yarn, or fur, or plastic, or whatever material, in whatever shape in between the leather and the reed.

Anyone try this yet and remember what the results were? I'm about to tonight so at the very least you'll read about my amateur ears trying to hear differences.

Alexi,
BG offers has the revelation line of ligatures which have different metals that contact the reed. The super revelation has gold-plated metal.

I am confused as to what you are asking, Alexi.

Consider this:

[....]

They now offer a leather ligature (similar to the Rovners), however combined it with the popularity of the three plate choices in their optimum line. So now you can attach to the inside of the ligature (with velcro nonetheless!) a metal plate with two bars, a hard leather plate, or a soft leather plate (or, if you want, just play it with the velcro! A secret fourth choice!)

And then, 10 minutes later, you post this thread and say:

Are you asking if we've tried something other than the various materials and contraptions applied already...which you note in your previous post?

Are you asking if I'd tried, let's say, a slab of meat under my lig? [cool]

Precisely! For instance, I just stuck a thumbtac through the leather on my ligature (there was a hole already) so the head of the thumbtack contacted the reed. Interesting results, not bad, but significantly better, but I didn't want to take the chance of drawing blood every time I play or take the mouthpiece off. That's one example.

On another note, I have used with great success, the clear teethguard material meant for the mouthpiece as replacement material for the cork in the alternate C (left-hand C) mechanism. Have not had any play since and the key is now equally firm in relation to all the other pinky keys.

Just a suggestion and recommendation for those of you who invariably get the pressed-cork and play-in-the-left-hand-C syndrome.

Only suggestion in putting it in is to err on the side of putting it too far towards the wood rather than not far enough.

Just a suggestion.

*is interested*

perhaps I'll try new things too... the more stuff, the more you dampen the sound...darker the tone... I'm confused as to what the metal does (I thought it brightened the sound...) - but I think the general rule of thumb (correct me if I am wrong) is that on a normal lig (or, rovner or whatever), the more fabric...or leather i suppose, the darker the tone. SO I'm guessing the more stuff you put inbetween the lig and reed, the darker it becomes...in theory. of couse, there must be some lines drawn, since one can be "too dark" (imo) anyway- let us know what happens!

*couldn't be less interested*

I dunno about you, but I find that practicing makes me sound good, not a ligature.

Robert Moody,

Thanks for the responses. I just thought like injecting a little fun and interesting stuff into this thread. As per myself, I always enjoy trying out new things. I get bored very easily with old and monotonous things. Probably the reason that in every one of my posts, I have a different mouthpiece, or ligature, or this or that, and always go back and forth between them. Simply because I enjoy the "thrill of the hunt".

As for others, if you're not interested, don't post. I ignore threads that I'm not interested in, simply because I don't see the need to write a post SAYING that I'm not interested. I know that there are people ignoring this because it doesn't interest them. Feel free to join them.

agreed. I got an irritated e-mail from the board telling me not to post if I dont have an opinion or if I'm not well-versed in whatever is being discussed or whatever. so why does everyone else do it?

though GBK's thing was really quite amusing...

They get messages when things go too far, too.

We also close threads when their life has gone.
