One of the local TV stations came to the barbershop last Saturday. They filmed a segment on the afternoon blues jam and played it on the 10 o'clock news.

A few people at work mentioned that they saw the segment. One young lady asked what I was playing. A clarinet. "Oh," she replied, "I played one in middle school."

"My clarinet probably looks different." I mentioned. "It is an old silver plated one."

"That's right, the one I had was black. I stopped playing when I changed schools. That was probably just as well. The band director was arrested for molesting a student." Then she reflected for a moment and said "Yeah, I saw him on TV, too."

heh. a bit off topic, but I haven't met many people who HAVEN'T once played the clarinet. It's always "Oh, I played it for a year...I played it in middle school....I once played the clarinet"

amusing... [grin]

Yeah, one of my housemates played clarinet in high school. She still whips out her plastic Yamaha and belts out Beatles songs and TV tunes she buys books of.
At the end of the day, she probably enjoys playing more than I do!

Having been stopped on the Pennsylvania Turnpike for speeding over
80 MPH in the mid-1960s, the Officer who pulled me over asked for my license and registration. Seeing my Juilliard ID card in my wallet, he asked if I was a musician. I said yes, and that I played the clarinet, hoping to find some common ground between us. He said he had also played the clarinet at College, and then asked about my equipment. We stood along the side of the Turnpike taking clarinet for about 30 minutes, very interesting stuff!
He then took out his ticket book and began writing out my speeding violation. I told him again about our mutual love for the clarinet, and couldn't we just let this one slide.
He told me I was speeding, not the clarinet, so I got the ticket!
The clarinet sometimes helps, but "Crime Does Not Pay."

A story similar to John Moses' but with a happy ending:

Coming home from a gig, I once got stopped for exceeding the posted village speed limit in one of the towns in the Hamptons. I had never gotten a speeding ticket in my life, and figured this would break my streak.

The police officer took my info and went back to his car. After about 10 minutes he came back and said: "I played clarinet in high school and it was some of the best times I ever had. Anyone who has KLARINET as their license plate can't be all bad. Have a nice evening and drive safely."

No ticket.

Jim -Yeah, good story too. Out of a clear blue OK sky [today's], a lady briught me a cl, metal, Pan Am/Conn, needing a bit of TLC, put on 2 pads, straightened a couple of keys and the bell, slightly re-did the mp table/ curve, AND the DERN beast really plays quite well, in tune to my poor ears. I showed her and a couple of kids a few horns , an appreciative group. A good day so far, symp concert tonite ! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don
