I just went to my local music store and tried out mouthpieces (for the first time ><). I found that I really liked the Vandoren 5RV, but at the time I couldn't afford it. My question is this: is one 5RV similar enough to another 5RV that i wouldn't have to test another one out before buying it? In other words, can I mail-order one? The only reason I'm asking this is because it's an hour-and-a-half trip to said music store, and it's not exactly convinient. (Aside from that, I don't have a license, so I'd have to bum a ride...)

Theoretically, they are supposed to be the same. In practicality, they are not.
Like anything which is mass produced, there are small differences between individual samples. With mouthpieces, those small differences can have a dramatic effect.
The odds of ordering one mouthpiece on-line and having it play as well or better than the one you liked, is a gamble.
My advice is if you really liked the one you tried, call them and ask them to hold it aside until you can get back to the store to buy it...GBK

In July 2004 I spoke to a employee from Vandoren, he told me that all the mouthpieces where made by machine. The interesting part to know was that after the production, the facing was hand finished...
If it's true what he told me then it's finally clear why non of the mouthpieces seem to be the same....

no- you should always try a mouthpiece before buying it. Just because it's the same brand and even same model does NOT mean it will play as well as the one you tried and liked. Like the others said, there could be a small difference (not necesarilly a "defect" per se), that will completely change the way that particular mp plays.

wwbw.com will let you order several mouthpieces (I think three or four) at one time so you can select the best one, or none at all, and return the ones you don't want. As far as uniformity, Vandoren has a reputation for the most consistent quality in mass-produced mouthpieces. But it doesn't take much to be the best in that area.
