 Personal Inferiority
Author: John Stackpole
Date:   2005-03-04 20:35

Just to augment my feelings of inferiority...

A "just curious" question:

How many clarinets (all keys) do each of you own? (Brand immaterial)

Me? One (and I am still learning how to play it).

Well my wife owns both an Eb and Bb soprano clarinet; the Bb is a really nice Leblanc. We just purchased a Leblanc Eb alto clarinet so that we can do duets out of my duets for alto sax book. I can hardly wait. :o)

Ken! Glad to see someone else here appreciates recorders. Me, I'm saving up for a greatbass some time in the next decade or so ;)

Oh, and I have a bass clarinet and two sopranos, all Bb, no Buffets.

For regular personal use: 3 -R13s, one LeBlanc Infinite', an E11, and a Pete Fountain plastic. For personal enjoyment but not regular play: a Martin Busine, 3 LeBlanc Noblets, a Gutowski, a Kohlerts, an ancient Auguste Buffet made for Holton "A" HP, a Meyer, 3 metal horns, a Chicago Albert, Ernst Riedel, an old Pedlar, a Lafayette...and one Hohner recorder.....and more Vitos than I need. I just love clarinets!

When my kids/grandkids ask, I usually say, Y'know, they're just like rabbits, I'll have to count them today. From memory, not count, 2 Eb Sops, only 1 A!, at least a dozen Bbs [of various keyings], 2 altos, 3 basses, 2 alto saxes, at least another dozen "OLD" horns incl. 1 1820 flute, 1 1850 English horn, 2 oboes, a sop and a tenor sax, about 6 Alberts. Badly needed are, Bassets [cl, horn, bass], bari/bass sax, double reeds ETC. On my [our] demise, the oldies will prob go to museums, the "modern-playables" our family will have to disperse, several have significant values !! Oh yes a couple recorders somewhere. Had. 'nuff ?? I have 8 clarinets. One is bass clarinet. The rest are Bb sopranos. I just like clarinets and the subltle and not so subtle differences they all have. My main clarinet happens to be a new Vintage Buffet but I will sometimes go off with a Leblanc LL or a Selmer CT as my main horn. What I don't have is one of those plastic Vitos that alot of people are so happy with.

1- Vito bass bought broken in two from eBay for $80, fixed up
1- Alto, $80 eBay. Plays. Bell falls off a lot.

1- real deal on a sweet wooden French clarinet that I got on eBay in the early days and 'cause I thought eBay must be full of good, cheap, playable clarinets I gave it to my cousin and now I'm sorry.

2- Bb lamps
1- Pawnshop "French" clarinet (my first).
1- potential cso that my kid gave up on last year, but he's a great sax player now.
1 eBay Vito @ $50. Plays good-ish

... and the only one I play, Bb Yamaha 250

ever consider bringing it to a tech to put more cork on the lower section so the bell doesn't fall off? that could be bad for your clarinet's health [right]

Our house is home to the following:

6 Bb soprano clarinets
(an R-13, a 1926 Buffet, a LeBlanc Opus, a Yamaha 6- something, a King
Lemaire lovingly restored by Vytas Krass, and a Martin-Freres)

One Bundy Eb soprano from Ebay -- ugly, but a player.

One Woodwind (brand) bass

6 recorders (including a bass recorder)

3 oboes (Covey, Yamaha, and Linton)

A hammered dulcimer, an Appalachian dulcimer, an autoharp, a spinet piano, an electronic keyboard, a couple of harmonicas, a rain stick and other handheld percussion, and last but *not* least -- the vintage accordion that my husband brought with him from Germany when he emigrated at the age of 12.

I've got 15 clarinets at the moment:

1 Eb
11 Bbs
2 As
1 Eb alto

The three current joint favourites are my Leblanc LL (Bb), Leblanc Concerto (Bb) and Selmer 10G (A). But I like and play all the others too.

Recorders:

3 sopraninos
6 descants
6 trebles
2 tenors
2 basses
1 great bass
1 contrabass
.......I think - there may well be others lurking around!

Not long till the Easter Early Music Course - yippee - a whole week of recorder playing, and as a bonus I get to play the clarinet with string players, bassoonists etc in our spare time. I can't wait! :)

Hi David - no, I haven't, and I still think it has the best overall tone of all my clarinets, but it's much harder work to play, especially compared to the Leblancs, which almost play themselves!!

My Bundy beater horn, and my brand spanking new Yamaha Custom. But I haven't even started college yet, so what do you expect? ;)

(Ok, technically 3, I have one I got at a garage sale for $75 that isn't even worth repairing. It's around the house somewhere, I just don't know where, not that I care.)

All Bb.

Just a beginner compared to those above ,

Yanagisawa curly Sop and Keilwerth alto sax,
Amati eefer,
Pair Eaton Elites Bb and A,
stand by Evette and Schaeffer Bb,
Ridenour C clar,
Buffet Prestige bass
Fox IV polyprop bassoon (property of spouse)

and for the desert island choice - I'd take the bass clarinet !

Messr Stackpole -
There is an inverse relationship between the number of clarinets owned and the number of paramours in your little black book.

Your ahead of the curve, from what I can see.

Just like with 'your clarinet setup'-type of thread, I'm really amused and amazed.

As for me,
2 Bb -- RC ; B12
1 A -- Festival , used

1 sop sax - made in China. Stopped playing..

Recently, I was terribly tempted to buy a used bass clarinet, but that's probably some time later due to present budget constraint..:(

Evette & Shaeffer Bb from about 1965.

Patricola CL-7 grenadilla C-clarinet, bought five years ago, and what I play the most.

Conn Castle C-melody tenor sax, made about 1923, bought six years ago, and repaired many times, until I finally had it properly restored a few months ago, and I'm playing it much more.

Woodwind and Brasswind store brand Bb sop sax, bought five years ago. The better I get on my other instruments, the more I realize how awful I sound on this one and why the sop sax really is a hard instrument to play well.

Buescher student model (i.e., the modern horn that just uses the name, not the real vintage horn) Eb alto sax, which I should be playing more, because altos really are easier to play in tune than other saxes, and this one is no exception.

I may still have this Cundy-Bettoney hard rubber Bb with pot-metal keys I bought from an unscrupulous dealer five years ago at a folk festival, who assured me it was a vintage valuable wooden horn. He threw in a second, vintage valuable Cundy-Bettoney and both their old stinky cases, for a total of 90 bucks. I guess I really can't complain. I think I gave at least one of the horns away. The dealer has not been seen at this festival since.

They're all "Albert" system Buffets:
3 C
3Bb
2Bb HP
2A
1Eb
I mainly play the oldest C for our band jobs (95%); then the best A; then the best Bb (All circa 1900).

2 Bb (Yamaha 26II and Buffet E13... older than I am!).

I also 'possess' another clarinet... I think it's a Boosey and Hawkes. Lovely wooden one which I borrowed for my Grade 6 exam in June (for a week) and haven't given back yet!

Also 'possess' a Jupiter tenor sax which belongs to school (I've had it since new and its surprisingly good!) and a Sonora bassoon (council's, same as clarinet).

Also own a Yamaha Flute.
