 Rose Studies... again (sorry)
Author: Jazzy04

Hi everyone...

Just wondering, Im doing the rose studies at uni and I cant seem to find a list anywhere as to what each study actually helps with... I have looked on the net everywhere, searched the BBoards and i still cant find anything. I was just wondering if anyone knew what the first 20 Rose studies (out of the 40), actually concentrate on...
I have established a rough idea obviously from playing them, but i just wanted to know if anyone knew for sure...
Thanks a bunch!!!
have a good one!

The 40 Rose Studies were taken and adapted from the works of the great violinists and violin teachers of the 18th and 19th century.

Each of the studies is unique and specific problems - rhythmic, technical, stylistic, or phrasing are addressed.

Always remember that these were originally performed on violin, thus logical breathing points for the clarinet must be inserted.

As your initial question sounds suspiciously like a university project, why don't you list your ideas for others to assess? ...GBK

hahaha, yes it does sound sus... but my intentions are innocent i promise
i have actually have only just started my degree as in like 3 days ago... so trying to cheekily collect material for my assignments at this stage would well and truly be jumping the gun...
i was just curious for my own personal development, for instance i am playing Weber concerto no. 2 and know that no 10 of the studies will help me get around the break easier and more efficiently... as well as help me create a solid rhythmic feel and preciseness...
as for the other ones... as i have said, i have only just started with my degree and have actually only bought the book in the last week... so i havent played any of the others... i have skimmed through and had a peek but no real time to analyse... hence asking if there was indeed a definate explanation as to what the studies worked on so that if i ever need something fixed... i can go straight to that study... that is then not to say that im not going to play all of the studies, but as mentioned previously, its a developmental process....
thanks heaps though for your pirating concerns.. hehehe
yours truthfully

Hmm, that pretty well confirms my suspicions that violininst are a bunch of non-breathing zombies.

I think Rose and Polatscheck were actually trying to force you to play when terribly out of breath. Have you ever noticed that the less oxygen you have going to your brain the more apt you are to loose concentration and make mistakes. This is their evil plan. Personally I think Polatscheck's Advanced #1 is the evilest ever written.

A great teacher gives you answers to questions
you don't even know you should ask.

Are you referring to the order that Bonade used for his students? I would be interested in knowing that as well? He started his students with the Rose book.

I would suggest doing a Google search for "Campione On Clarinet." He was my teacher many years ago and later my colleague. He addresses the Rose 40 studies in great detail in his book and it may be of great help to you. Possibly, a bit pricey, but he needs the money for his fishing trips!
