Is it wise of me to invest in an Eb clarinet and A clarinet before going off to college? I'm looking at a Patricola Eb and Buffet R-13 or Festival A. I have also realized that Festivals are inexpensive Prestige Clarinets and R-13 are inexpensive Vintage. It all depends on the tone you are looking for!!

I'd say save your money on the Eb and A unless you have a definate need for them right now. Make sure you have a good Bb then after a semester or two of lessons go for an A or Eb. If it's solo work or orchestra than A will probably be used more often, and if it's band the Eb will be more common.
Waiting to buy them will give you a chance to improve your playing. Also your private teacher will probably be able to give you some suggestions on instruments and dealers.

Are you majoring in music? If so, an A clarinet is pretty much a necessity for orchestral music; an Eb or bass isn't required since the college or conservatory will have them for you. The Patricola Eb is nice in sound and price (and they're a sponsor) but like everything we play each is a different animal, and you'll need to play a few before you find "the right one".

Ah - no, they're not. They're different from each other - not better, not worse, just different. Don't think of them as more or less expensive anythings - think of them as siblings.

You'll definitely want the A when you go to college; even if you don't end up playing in an orchestra, there's a lot of good solo music for the A. As Mark said, Eb and bass clarinets are generally provided by the school; however, they're often in very bad shape. I wouldn't worry about an Eb unless you end up playing it a great deal and the school's instruments are particularly bad. I hope this helps!

If you plan on doing any orchestral work, an A clarinet would be helpful unless you like transposing down a half step and not being able to play low Eb on Bb clarinet.
E-flat isn't very common, but if you like being the only player on a part in symphonic band, then it would come in handy.
