Feb Survey: metal clarinets on eBay
Author: jim lande
Date:   2005-03-01 04:41

Results from the February 2005 survey of metal clarinet prices on eBay

Conclusions: same as last year. [see http://tinyurl.com/54o5d ]
1) You can buy a repairable student model for $30 to $50, or you can pay a couple hundred. Your choice.
2) A lot of metal clarinets are sold without barrels or with obvious damage.
3) Some pro horns go for less than some student models.

185 auctions closed in February, including one lot of 3 and one lot of 6. (175 in 2004)

156 auctions received bids.
$107 was the average high bid ($99 in 2004)

114 auctions were for complete, un-restored Bb student models. (excludes 4 auctions where I had questions about bidding)
$71 average price for these, ($65 in 2004; $61 in 2003)
$51 median price for these ($51 in 2004; $46 in 2003)
$53 Std deviation, ($54 in 2004; $35 in 2003)

17 student models appeared to be missing barrels or had serious damage
$48 average high bid for these. (Don’t make this mistake!)

13 pro models (7% of sample),
final bids on these ranged from $153 to $890

69% of the listed instruments were made in the U.S. (70% in 2004)

77 different model names

22% maker not known

TKS, Jim, What COMPREHENCICIVITY [to coin a word], with statistical analysis and multiple listings !!!! Just what do you do with your spare-time relaxing ?? I'm just going to have to buy one of your "recommendations". Presently my "menagerie" [sp?] includes only one metal, a very mediocre [but shiny] "VICTORY" with a somewhat tarnished Bettoney?? barrel. I badly need a better one, I guess. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don
