higher pitch with low notes played pianossimo
Author: Marcowelby

Hi,

My teacher remarked that when you play lower notes pianissimo the pitch tends to become somewhat high. I checked with a tuner and sure enough my low notes were all a little high pitch when I play pianissimo.

Any tricks to improve the pitch with this particular problem?

Thanks

Marc

No real "tricks" involved. Just lip them a little lower. Pretty much part of normal intonation training on most clarinets. Everyone needs to develop their "ear"and learn to compensate for intonation problems.

Airstream. When people play soft, they often put a less steady airstream through the instrument, causing, among other things, a bit of a pinch on the reed. Soft notes, more than anything, require a steady airstream.

in the same line of questioning...my low notes tend to be quite flat, and when I play them forte/fortissimo (sometimes even mezzo forte...) they go REALLY flat. what am I doing wrong?

Lindsie - the general rule is louder=flatter and softer=sharper.

The louder=flatter rule is especially tricky when playing with the great deal of louder=sharper instruments, i.e. most winds and brass.

Coupled with the warmer=flatter of string instruments vs. winds' warmer=sharper, tuning is extra tricky.

Lindsie: Just because loud is easier to play, don't let up on your embouchre.

I think I know why the notes are especially flat now- I have a mouthpiece with a small bore... unless the third register is altissimo, and not chalameau??

MIL,

It's my thinking that a smaller bore would mean sharper . . . maybe it could be something else . . . ?

yes, you are right, it makes the clarinet sharper overall, but the third register flat. however, I realized that I had been referring to the chalameau register, not the altissimo...

Ah. Point explained!

In that case, Alex, above (EEBaum) beat me to what I was going to say. I gotta monitor the board more often. Seems he's been beating my responses more often than not . . . . [yeah]

I was reading a Tom Ridenour book that said that if one has a good MP, that person should not have to change their embrochure throughout the different registers...
