 Mystery Barrel

One of my students has a Buffet clarinet that her aunt used about 10 years ago. There is an extra barrel of a type that I ahve never seen. Can anyone tell me about it? It is a hard rubber or plastic barrel that has ribs like a DEG, but it only has three. The strangest thing about it is that the bore is RECTANGULAR. Yes, rectangular on the inside, not round. This is the strangest thing I have ever seen. There is no brand name on the barrel. I do not like the way it plays. I guess I should have taken it to TMEA, but I forgot it. Can anybody help me figure out what in the heck this is? Thanks.
P.S. By the way, several of us played the Legere reeds at TMEA and they play amazingly well. I am going to use a Legere for a while and see how I like it. I play a 5RV Lyre on a Buffet RC and it really sounds and feels good. This could be a breakthrough.

You may have a museum piece! The only significant departure from a circular bore I recall is in Rendall, "The Clarinet", the Schaffner cl, not having those pages available I cant help further. You might inquire on Onelist "Early Clarinet" of the experts re: the oldies. Don

Rovner made rectangular-bored barrels. I don't remember if they were ribbed.

Phil Rovner is in Baltimore, you might try to give him a call and ask if it's one of his babies.

Thanks for the info Dave. I contacted Rovner by e-mail. Rovner did make a rectangular chambered barrel but it is no longer being made. The mystery is solved.
