 I'm so weird

Over the summer, I'm going to learn how to play the oboe. Do you think the fingerings will confuse me? I need to be careful, because when the summer is over and I go back to school, I'm still going to be playing the clarinet! :-[

Well, I don't think you're weird, because I have done the same thing -- except I'm sticking with my new best friend, the oboe.

Yes, there is some potential for fingering confusion between the clarinet and the oboe. I still have to think when I use the r.h. side key on the oboe (like the r.h. trill keys on the clarinet). On the clarinet, this gets you Eb/Bb; on the oboe, it is Ab. Likewise, the oboe fingering for F# is the same as the clarinet fingering for Bb/Fnat.

Where this comes into conflict most is in quick chromatic passages, where the fingers have to go faster than the conscious brain.

If you have ever played a soprano or alto recorder, the oboe fingerings should seem pretty easy and logical.

My friend, who is a really talented musician, started on clarinet in 5th grade. The summer before 6th grade, she switched to oboe and was advised to not play the clarinet anymore, because even though the fingerings may not have confused her, the oboe has a completely different embouchure, and her teacher was afraid that playing clarinet and oboe would mess up one or both of her embouchures. Since she still had her clarinet at home (it had been her mother's), she tried playing it about 6 months or so after starting oboe, and she couldn't do it!

Anyways, the moral of my boring story is that maybe a few months won't really hurt, but if it were me, I'd be afraid of really liking the oboe and wanting to play both, and not being able to. By the way, it's probably a good thing that my friend switched to oboe, because she was a better clarinet player than me anyways... ;-)

Det. Lennie Briscoe: I *hope* he plays the clarinet.

I play in a community band with a guy who switches instantly between bass clarinet, oboe and English horn. And plays them very well. He also plays soprano clarinet and soprano, alto and tenor saxes as needed. He has found the best way to make a living in music is to play everything. His gigs with symphony orchestras are on oboe/English horn, his wedding and dance gigs on saxes. I imagine the ability to change between clarinet and oboe is a result of how much practice time is spent on each.
