I have never actually seen a [close-up] basset clarinet, and was wondering if anyone had any pics? I googled it and found one picture, but it was small and I couldn't really see the fine intricacies of the clarinet. It did look longer though...
another question- I believe I have heard the term "basset clarinet" and "basset horn" I think- wondering what the difference is? I have speculated that one is in A and one in F, but that just feels wrong.
thanks

You're correct. The basset clarinet is in A, the basset Horn is in F. Pictures... try the Selmer or Buffet websites. They've usually got pics up there somewhere.

Agreed, MIL and MN, the B C is a soprano A, the B H is an alto F, and along with the extended range [Basset would be easier] bass cl are available [quite limited] in one or so "styles" of low-note fingerings. I've wondered if there might be a Basset contra-alto [in Eb] to range-cover the contra-bass. Thats about as low a thot as I have, down among the gigantic brass basses ! The costs of these are almost double the "regulars" which has led several of us [thread "Low Eb/D"] to try "poor-boy" tube-in-bell methods to extend a usual cl by a 1/2 tone to low D [or A for the Eb's like a bari sax]. In tech terms "pushing the envelope"?? Fun, Don
Thanx, Mark, Don

I believe Leblanc makes a contra-alto clarinet range to low C. It's the paperclip model 350. This would qualify as "basset" contra-alto.
Never saw one in person, maybe rarer than its counterpart: the contrabass in Bb.

I wish I had a 350. The 352 is a pain to lug around. It probably wouldn't be if it had a smaller case. I would think it would since the instrument comes apart in the middle.
I had a fairly good picture of a basset clarinet on a computer at school. I'll see if it's still there tomorrow, assuming it hasn't been deleted in one of our teacher's random deletion sprees.

I wish I had a basset...horn or clarinet... besides the key difference, what is the difference? did mozart write for the BC? or BH?

For basset horn fans, check out Stephen Fox's website. He is a Canadian clarinet builder and makes 2 models of basset horns: small and medium bore.
The small bore is especially unique as it has the smallest bore of all current makers and is visually a stretched-out clarinet.
there are photos on the website.

Hi Contra, I have a 352, I don't find it too bad handling wise. The case is in fact smaller than my one-piece bass clarinet.
I have not seen a 350. But if doubt it uses a much smaller case if the horn fits into it in one piece without having to disassemble.
My only constant headache is my Vito BBb contrabass, one piece body, got a case the size of a coffin. need a dolly to cart it around.

My dream in life is to own a bassett clarinet. Or at least play on one. *sigh* They're amazing.
Has anyone ever heard the Mozart Concerto done on a bassett clarinet? Sabine Meyer does a great recording of the Mozart done on a bassett clarinet. It was weird to hear it done on a regular A clarinet afterwards.

Det. Lennie Briscoe: Maybe he's got some other life-long pursuits.
Lt. Anita Van Buren: Like what? You think he plays the clarinet?
Det. Lennie Briscoe: I *hope* he plays the clarinet.

Stephen Fox has a BIG waiting list for his instruments, be warned, a charming man.
Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

I love sabine meyer! I think she embellishes the mozart a tad bit too much, but she's awesome. I think I heard her, and possibly charles Neidich (another personal favorite...call it severe conditioning from a teacher...) on the basset. I want one SOOO badly! I heard rumor that they dont make them much anymore and that they're hard to get and expensive. not sure if that's true. but they're pretty awesome instruments.
...didn't stadler's look different? I could have sworn it was brown and the bell looked different... hmm...
