I was just wondering if anyone here had ever studied the Mercadante Concerto. I understand that it may be a bit, shall we say, 'elementary' for some of you more seasoned clarinetists, but I've grown quite fond of it over the past 4 months or so. I had never heard of it until my teacher gave it to me in a pile of pieces to play through, and I fell in love upon my first reading. I would say that it's *roughly* the same league as (dare I say?) the Mozart (gasp! No she didn't just say the *Mozart* did she?!)
Any thoughts on this piece?

can not comment on Mercadante
BUT.....any new poster who quotes from the beloved officer Briscoe (esp. the infamous wisecracks) is always welcome in my book.

Thanks for the feedback on the Mercadante. I'll have to look into the Crussel - not a piece I'm familar with.
I tell people I have two loves in life - Law & Order and The Fantasticks (an amazing musical, for those who may be theatre illiterate). I don't say that music is one of my loves in life, because music *is* my life.
Speaking of which, Law & Order is on in 4 minutes. If you really want, I can post some more wonderful L & O quotes - Briscoe was my absolute favorite :-) If only Jerry Orbach had played the clarinet, then I would have built him a shrine. He was actually one of my favorite actors. But L & O awaits...

The actor who played another detective, Barney Miller, did indeed play clarinet....quite well.
Heard him do a bit of K622 rondo on a Pops (Pittsburgh) radio tape
(WQED FM) and it wasnt bad..
Actually Orbach sang on Broadway (as did the Barney Miller star...cant remember actor's name before my morning dark roast) so maybe Briscoe did tenor sax

I didn't know that about Barney Miller. I'll have to check that out. Do you know if he did a recording of the entire Mozart?
I did know that Jerry Orbach sang on Broadway (one of the reasons I liked him so much). That's actually how I got into The Fantasticks, because he was in the original cast, playing a major role (well, there are only 8 roles in the entire show, so I guess all of them are major). He was also in the original casts of 42nd Street, Carnival, Promises Promises, and Chicago to name a few. He had an amazing voice - anyone with an interest in musical theatre should definitely get one of those recordings (I recommend The Fantasticks :-P ).

And of course Orbach was the voice of Lumiere, the candlestick, in Disney's animated version of "Beauty and the Beast."
