 Tenon corks

I know this is a really dumb question, and I should probably know this, BUT... How do I tell if the corks on the tenons of my clarinet are real or synthetic? I was going to order cork grease of the Dr.'s site, and I realized that I really don't know. They LOOK real... but how do I tell for sure?

If they look very porous, they're real. If it has a cork 'colour' but you don't see the pores, it's synthetic. If I had a digital camera, I'd be able to show you (since I have examples of both).

Also, synthetic is much smoother to the touch.

Okay, I think the corks on my Yamaha YCL-26 marching horn are synthetic, and I'm pretty sure that the corks on my Selmer 9* are real. Would this sound about right?

The Selmer 9* would definitely have real cork tenons (unless replaced). Not too sure about the yamaha YCL, but I would think that that also would be real cork.

The fobes Debut has synthetic cork.

It's wine corks here, but you can see how the surface is non-porous.
