How can you tell if its clarinet music
Author: Simon

I am an ametour clarinet player and have been able to get a hold of some sheet music, however I am not sure how to tell if it is for clarinet or piano accordian. On some of the pieces it specifically says clarinet so that isn't a problem however on others it doesn't. How do I tell?

Many thanks!

Simon

If there's any chords, then that definitely rules out it being clarinet music. If it says something else up top, then it rules out it being clarinet music. Otherwise, I don't know if there are ways to tell without there being other parts to the music. If it's in the range of a clarinet, I say play it. It'd be good practice nonetheless.

Well, "clarinet" music, i.e., Bb fakebook music, can have the chord symbols transposed, as well (to facilitate improvising. Are these sheets from a jazz fakebook?). But if it's in the form of "braces", i.e., there are one or two treble clef lines plus a bass clef line, bracketed together, and there are multiple notes stacked on top of each other, it's probably piano / piano-accordian music. Also, if there are diagrams of guitar tablature, many articulation markings you don't understand (these are bowing instructions for violin), or little numbers written over/under the staff lines (I believe these indicate which row of chord buttons on the accordian to use), it's not clarinet music.

But that really doesn't matter. If you want to play with another Bb instrument, you can play from the piano parts, because you're both in Bb. Likewise, if it is indeed Bb music, and you want to play along with a piano, one of you will have to transpose anyway because your keys are different.
