I've been playing the clarinet for about a year & a half. and been playing with a Vandoren 2 and 1/2. I'm the best clarinetist in the section in my band. When should I move onto a thicker reed? And what's the difference between a 2 and a 4?.

Why do you want to move onto a thicker reed? If what you are using is making you the best clarinetist in the section, just stick to what is working. I have been using a #2 reed for many years and it seems to work great. It depends on what kind of music you want to play and what kind of mouthpiece you use. The difference between a 2 and a 4 will be huge. The 4 will be harder to produce clear tones at softer levels depending on the mouthpiece. I can't seem to play with a #4 reed and I have been playing for about 40 years. You can also try a different brand of #2 reeds. A Vandoren 2 will be different than a Mitchell Lurie 2 or a Marca 2. Sometimes just a different brand will help.

Thanks for the advice I think I might stick to a 2 and a half. I've heard a thicker reed gives you a darker tone and it's less likely to sqeak.

A Blue Box Vandoren #4 is NOT "thicker" than a Blue Box Vandoren #2. The blanks are the same.
The difference in strength is due to the different resistance of each reed...GBK

If you move to a thicker reed you may need a larger ligature.
