I performed my senior recital this evening!! My program started with the Debussy Premiere Rhapsodie, then the Mozart Kegelstatt Trio, and ended with the Copland Concerto. What a night! Many parts went very well, just as in rehearsal, but there were a few unexpected surprises in each of the pieces.
In hind sight, I should not have done both Debussy and Copland in one recital. It was quite difficult for me to get through, due mostly because I have felt pretty sick and fatigued all day (see my note below). But to perform two MAJOR works like that almost back-to-back was quite taxing. While I'm not one to take the easy way out of ANYTHING, I may have overextended myself with this one. (Darn it - I knew I should have listened to my teacher!!) :o)
(In relation to a post I saw here about stress making one feel sort of cold sick, that's exactly what happens to me. It happens right before every jury and before every recital, usually the day before and day of the performance. I get this "lump" in my throat, I don't breathe as easily, and I feel extremely fatigued - same symptoms as a bad cold.)
I will say, however, after listening to the recording of my recital on the way home, that it did not sound that bad. Of course I remember every single note I missed and every phrase I didn't taper, hearing the mistakes rather than the sections that were very successful. But it didn't sound as bad as I thought it did while I was walking off stage. I received very good reviews from all who attended and I am pretty pleased with the outcome.
It was nice to have a lot of family there to hear me - my in-laws had never heard me play before tonight. It was a lot of fun and I thought someone might want to hear about my experience.
