 Haynes Clarinets

Here's some additional material about the Haynes double-walled silver clarinets, which I got recently from Carl Sawicki, who's a top repairman (doing bassoons almost exclusively):

About the quantity of those Haynes clarinets ... back when I was doing Haynes flutes and was good friends with Louis Deveaux (the main man at Haynes), he gave me a thorough explanation of those instruments and told me they made no more than 350. Some of them were sold to the US armed forces and perhaps this is one of the reasons why they are so rare. Also, now that I think of the armed forces band connection, maybe William S. was trying to make something that was useable in a marching situation that wouldn't go out of tune between tunes. A lot of this (quantity) was confirmed by an article I read by an ex-curator of the Shrine to Music museum in Vermillion, SD, Deborah Check Reeves. An abstract is on the ICA site at http://www.clarinet.org/fests/2003/Reeves.asp She said 334 were made. She made a similar presentation to the American Musical Instrument Society. http://www.amis.org/pubs/newsletter/AMISSpring02.pdf

This is a piece of clarinet history, and the workmanship as far as I'm concerned is almost unbelieveable. Think of soldering tubes on the outside AND the inside and making the bore absolutely mirror-like ... and with no leaks. It's fantastic craftsmanship.

Ken - Did Debbi have the US patent number in her article? I have seen it [in passing] and could re-find it and post it here. Glad to do it, as it may have some add'l detail of value to some of us. The title was [I believe], "Thermoclarinet" Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Don -

I've sent an email to Deborah Check Reeves requesting her full presentation and photos. If she's willing, maybe they can be posted here.

The 1926 patent may not be easy to get. I've read that the USPTO is putting old patents online, but you know this area better than I do. If you can get it, I'd love to see it.

Ken - Dr. Reeves' article in the June 2004 ICA, pg 28+ mentions W S Haynes 1929 [issued] patent US 1,715,162, 3 pages. Its at least viewable as retrieved by patent # search, followed by Images. If you have a better "reader" than I, you may be able to copy it, I cant [rite now]. The easiest way to get a copy will be via your reference librarian requesting a copy from your [a] Patent Depository Library, tho some large libraries have the needed CD's and software, like our Tulsa CC, will get one next trip. If we needed a clarinet for Rap music, undoubtedly we would select one made of platinum.
