I'm thinking of purchasing an Acoustic Image Coda amplifier combo---it has a downward firing woofer that supposedly leads to omni-directional sound projection. It can be used to amplify acoustic instruments----any thoughts?

Low frequencies are by nature omnidirectional, regardless of which way the woofer is pointed. Nowadays many woofers are made downward-firing for convenience, as that orientation gives the most protection against the elements and three-year-olds equipped with Dad's screwdriver. The phenomenon of low-frequency omnidirectionality is also what allows you to place a subwoofer anywhere in your room.

So I guess then the REAL question here is about what frequency this woofer will be used to amplify, and does it fit into the range that would be considered "omnidirectional" in which case you may not even NEED the downfiring woofer . . . .
For that matter, why not purchase or rig a downfiring (or up, I don't see why it should make a difference) midrange/tweeter system instead of having to aim it forward every time? To have it spread in 360ยบ rather than just towards the audience....Sorry. Just doing some thinking out loud (or rather via a keyboard)

The amp actually has a forward firing midrange driver and tweeter. I'm thinking I can use it to amplify my archtop guitar and perhaps my clarinet via a microphone.

I see. In that case, wjk, the woofer wouldn't really be used all too often (moreso on the guitar than the clarinet, that's for sure), and maybe it's not worth the extra money that would be.
Or maybe the difference in price is negligable to ya and you might get it anyway (not too sure on the costs and whether you have a budget set up or not).
If it's the secondary, then I can't help you since I don't know whether it'd be worth getting and how much better it'd work than a different setup. I'm sure there's a return policy. Maybe you can purchase it, test it against other setups and see if it's worth hanging on to.
Needless to say, if you do end up using it at some point, make sure to come back to here and let us know how it went!

Remember that your microphone is the "gate" in the process...
if the microphone favors one part of your instrument, that is what you will hear most clearly. It's a rare microphone that handles both acoustic guitar and louder instruments (like the clarinet).
