Which would you recommend? I need to order some new reeds, and I have been playing on Regulars, and really like them, but I was wondering what thoughts on the FOFs were. So in general, do you like them? I play 3 1/4's, is the strength the same on the FOFs? In your opinion is the quality of sound the same or better?

I can't say right now, but this Friday I'll finally receive the box of Gonazalez regular cut reeds and i'll let you know how they are comparing to the FOF which I already have.
About the FOF I'm not sure yet. Sometimes they squick it's very weird. all the reeds from the box will squick. sometimes they are great. I have 2.75 strength and sometimes they feel too soft, but sometimes exactly right.
I am almost finished with the FOF box (which is from the old brown box version) but after trying these new regular cut reeds I'll know better.

To be honest, I don't see TOO much variation from reed to reed (even from brand to brand). Maybe that's because I learned the basics of reed adjusting and so make most of any brand reed play fairly well.
But between the RC gonzalez and the FOF, I liked the way the RC played slightly more. I can't say why (nor even REMEMBER if there WAS a specific reason), but I do remember saying to myself that instead of buying FOFs I'd probably buy RCs.
Nowadays I buy whatever's in stock at the local shop, in a size 5, and whittle away until it works.

alexi, you can't possibly compare a rico royal to a vandoren...or a zonda to a gonzalez- surely you have seen some differences?

I do notice that there are differences. But, in my opinion, once I've worked on them, they're all very playable. Right now I like the sound coming out of the Vandy V12s. But honestly, I could care less what reed I use. I don't perform nearly enough to need to have a ton of "performance ready" reeds, and any reed will do for practicing. Plus, once a performance comes, no matter WHAT brand reed, I'm sure I'll find out that's good for that performance.
From the few different ones I've tried, they all work after adjustments. I use V12s cause they're relatively cheap, and readily available anywhere.

i have found the regular cut Gonzalez reeds to be about half a size softer than the FOF, and maybe a quarter size softer than V12 reeds. I quite like the RC reed- certainly a better reed than the vandoren blue box, and in the 4 strength the cut works well with my mouthpiece.
the Gonzalez RC reed is the only thin blank reed that i would consider buying for use in a professional orchestra (there may be good working examples of other brands). I find only a small amount of adjusting is necessary and the cane has endurance that make other brands seem pathetic in comparison.
