Heyho,
i am looking forward to buy a Selmer Centered Tone but i am not sure which mouthpiece to use.
I found following sentence in the database (concerning the CT):
"Intuitively one might think that a large bored mouthpiece would work
well with this instrument. I don't have a Selmer mouthpiece from this era,
but my recollection of those I have measured have bores that are large
DIAMETRICALLY, but are rather short. They play quite sharp on contemporary
instruments . Essentially a SMALL bore mouthpiece. This makes sense. If one
plugs in a standard contemporary mouthpiece into a Selmer CT the pitches in
the throat tones are very flat because the overall volume of
mouthpiece+barrel is too great."
Also a Cicero Kaspar 13 is mentioned to be a very good choice (but it is i think extremly rare and much to expensive for a student looking forward to spend his last money for a Selmer CT... like i will)
Because i play Klezmer and Jazz articulation is importand to me i thought of an Diamond "open+" (but that is against the sentence from the database).
Please help me

Hello to you in Germany, (one of my favorite countries in which to spend time). I play a CT with a Vandoren 5JB and have not noticed that the throat tones tend to be flat. I seem to get an overall in-tune sound that is very controlable. I use a Mitchell Lurie Premium #2 or 2 1/2 reed. Maybe it is because I have played with a 5JB for many years and I tend to compensate for flatness with my lips. I tried playing with a Pomarico Saphirre open and that seemed alittle to "stable" for my taste. Playing with more of a closed mouthpiece tends to keep me from being able to "bend" notes and I think that if you are going to play a CT, you are going to want to bend notes to a certain degree. What you found in the database makes sense on paper, but I would try a few different mouthpieces to see if it applies to you personally. Das ist gut!

Back in high school when I (actally, my parents) purchased a new Centered Tone Selmer Bb, I remember that it came with a HS* Selmer mouthpiece. One of my other friends who also played a CT used a B*. The problem however, with these combinations, was the clarinets tended to play quite sharp and we either got longer barrels or pulled the joints considerably.
(afterthought) Most of the Selmer clarinetists that I knew switched to Buffet R13s--some with Kaspar mpcs--in college and have continued playing them to this day. You may want to consider a Buffet or Leblanc before deciding on a Selmer CT. However. if you are absoulutely "sold" on Selmer, in my opinion, the "big sound" of the older Selmer BT is a far better choice. They were (and still may be) the best jazz clarinet ever.
