 Funny Thing.............

(Happened on the Way to the Forum)

FYI, Reed #2 is a fun book to play. Practically all clarinet with only brief alto sax fills. "Comedy Tonight" is the main tune but the "fun" comes in the other music.

Forum is a show that I've played many, many times, both in pro and amateur productions. The sax usage is extremely limited, with virtually all of it coming in the dance number "At The House Of Marcus Lycus; the baritone in the Reed IV book also gets to do the elephantine bit in "Bring Me My Bride".

You will need decent extreme key playing skills in several of the numbers, for Zero Mostel was like The Mer in that songs had to be reset to fit his singing range. I think the worst was the clarinet solo under Psuedolis in "Free"...six or seven sharps with a VERY exposed part. (I had to do it one night when the Reed I guy got caught up in a drug bust and none of the other clarinet players was willing to take a stab at same.) The ornamental figures in "Everybody Ought To Have A Maid" are about as bad, usually coming out somewhat jumbled as some of the players have trouble with the rapid notes over the break.

Sadly, the updated dance number that is the current "At The House Of Marcus Lycus" has yet to be seen in the rental books. That version, with Vibraslap, English horn, bass trombone and other embellishments, is a much more satisfying tune...
