How thankful I am to this board and the bboarder who recommended this book!
I literally fell in love this thin, teenager(or even younger audience)-oriented booklet.
The most fun thing I read was that the composer who made a clarinet music called 'Harlikin' wanted the clarinetist to wear the costume(like a harlequin, I imagine) and dance while playing the piece! Did this really happen? Who was the player?
Any way, once again, many thanks!

You certainly are welcome, Lucy [cc], I still get a "kick" out of it. A great amount of accurate info with fine humor, looked up Harlekin , would [should] get a copy and play the part, will try to find it. My copy was a gift from my close pro friend in Tulsa, a fine teacher, Bill Viseur, a student on back of Dwight Dailey [Tul Univ] who is now conductor of our Comm band. Bill plays solo cl in our local [BVL] symp and sits 3rd cl in our C B !!, is a "brittle diabetic" , fighting it. I still remember how well he played those tough parts, in Rom. Raphsody and Poly Dances et al, sure wish I could play like that. He usually plays a Selmer Recital, likes G8 faced mps [we exchange mps for more kicks] and has tonal quality much like Shifrin. "Nuff said, enjoy, Don

The piece was composed by Karlheinz Stockhausen for Suzanne Stephens and, yes, she has performed it as a performance piece. She also recorded it for Deutsche Grammophone. It sounds fiendishly difficult, even without the dancing. There is also a somewhat shorter work called "Der Kleine Harlekin." I don't remember whether its a shorter version or a completely different work but both are on the same CD.
There is a great Stockhausen site here:

Many TKS, Jack K, will see if we can at least find the CD. The work itself "sounds" like much above my skill level, but like Shepherd on the Rock, it'll make for fun and humility !! Don

Jean Koperud has also performed the Harlekin piece admirably. I hope I spelled her name right!
