 MOUTHPIECE HISTORY INFO
Author: jmsa

I recently purchased( it has not arrived yet) a Selmer Benny Goodman , new in box mouthpiece. Can anyone help me out with the history and specs for this mouthpiece. What blank, facing, material it is made from, suggested reed strength( I know that Benny Goodman used a soft reed), and rarity. The mouthpiece has Bennys signature, then below that is a large BG in a circle, and below that is a star. I would appreciate any information about this item. Thank You very much.

Hi, jmsa - I inherited a similar mp, Benny Goodman [script sig] with BG [in circle], no * tho, from a horn trade, and have puzzled over its source/ancestry. Does yours also say Selmer, or is that just from whom you bot it? In some of the inst. catalogs, there are listings under BG for various items, and a Weiner showed jazz SAX mps. I believe I once ran onto a French accesories maker BG, they show many fabric-rubber ligatures. So, I dont know any answers to your questions, others, please HELP us ! My BG is a good jazz mp, not an extreme like? the VD 5JB, and works well with my Big-Bore [15.0 mm] cls. I have a 1956 Selmer "Showbook" which lists many other-named mps than Selmer, and I have wondered if many of them weren't "stencils", most made by Woodwind Co. in NYC, possibly our BG's ??? Hope someone may know. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

I've collected a few of these Benny Goodman signature mouthpieces over the years. All have since been sold to friends or colleagues.

These were marketed by Selmer about 50 years ago.

If I remember correctly, they played fairly open, but probably could benefit from a careful refacing. The blank seemed to be of better than average quality.

I have noticed that some of these Benny Goodman signature mouthpieces have gone for (IMO) very inflated prices in eBay...GBK
