I have a slightly peeled membrane on one of my pads and makes very dificult if not impossible to play that note. My question is, do I need to change the whole pad or can I try to glue the membrane with glue. If it can be glued can you suggest the type of glue that will do the job.

Replace the whole pad. You will probably have problems with the pad sealing if you try to re-glue. Take it to a technician and have him replace that pad (pads are very cheap, and if it is only one pad it shouldn't cost too much in labor). I would have him check the rest of the pads too, if they are all the same age, the one pad peeling could be a sign of more to come.

A new pad, I suggest having a repair tech do it, not costly if there are no other problems. You may find below a thread re: periodic inspection/maintenance. Luck, Don

For a felt pad, nothing will help, and it must be replaced. For an artifical pad (Valentino, for example), a pinhead-sized dab of Elmer's White Glue does nicely. Be careful to clean off any glue that oozes out around the edges.

If you need a quick fix before you can get to the repair shop, you could try wrapping pad, cup and all in a small piece of plastic wrap (eg. "Saran"), securing it tightly with a bit of a "twistie" wire tie. I remember Harold Wright playing for a whole week on this kind of jury-rigged fix until he could get to Hans Moennig's to have the pad replaced. Probably sealed better than most of the music store repairs in our area!

A long time ago I had a sax student use that saran wrap with a grocery bag twist tie for one of his LH side keys for about 4 months!

Replacing it would be the best option. A lot of my clarinet's pads are like that, but I haven't got the money to replace them all at once. I concur with the temporary Saran Wrap idea.
