It used the clarinet polka. Just thought I'd mention it. Except (unfortunately) not with clarinets.
Y'know. . . I've noticed the clarinet polka being transcribed, performed, and recorded on a variety of OTHER instruments. Does this not defeat the purpose? I've heard saxaphones, accordian, even a clarinet polka YODEL. I have to say it's interesting, but then it's not REALLY the "clarinet" polka anymore. . . .

I think that the clarinet solo in High Society and the Clarinet Polka are very similar.

And let's not forget that Geico also used Benny Goodman's Jersey Bounce as its jingle for some years.
Tunes for Flute Technic (book 2, I think) has our favorite polka listed as the "Piccolo Polka." Tunes for Alto Saxophone Technic lists it as "Famous Polka."
I guess they were scared to take clarinet tunes out of the closet in the days before the Grenadilla Gorilla.
BTW, I agree that the thing in the trio of High Society bears great similarity.

The "Stars and Stripes" piccolo solo on Tuba always drove me over the edge; it's nauseating enough on piccolo. v/r Ken

the first time i can remember hearing the clarinet was an old recording of the "Klarinetten mueckel" by one Henry Arland..... in 1999 i went into a store in Hamburg and noticed folk music playing on the tv/video in the corner- it was Arland and sons (one plays clarinet, one keyboard) playing together. To be blunt, it was not nice.
back in NZ, i hunted down the old record and listened again- he really did sound ok in the old days....
these days i don't find my young students so inspired by the "clarinet polka" but for me that piece was a turning point in my life! i can hear you all groaning... "sad!"

Yes, Clarinet Polka was a turning point in my life too. Our high school band did a weekly concert in the park during the summertime. One week I did the Clarinet Polka as a solo. I can still hear the cars honking their horns when I was done. Yay!

The first time I recorded "Clarinet Polka," the tuba player took a turn playing the melody of the first strain. It was OK, arpeggios are arpeggios.
Many years later we recorded it again. Encouraged by several rounds of refreshments, I embellished the whole thing and the tuba player, not to be outdone, demonstrated why he plays tuba instead of singing - he yodelled (yodeled?). OK, it's just not right however you look at it!
My apologies to anyone who stumbles across that recording!

A Polish colleague of mine claims that the name of this tune is really the Grandfather Polka and not the Clarinet Polka. He plays it on the bassoon.

Although the piece is credited to a specific person it is debatable if he actually composed it.......As a senior in high school we seven graduating clarinet players played it standing in front of the band. Took lotsa nerve.

My accordionist (who calls me "my clarinetist"!!) plays the Clarinet Polka (and calls it that) with her accordion duet partner, but in the key of C.
That's just not right, folks!

I listened to the Geico comml. closely last night....conclusion: One or more clarinets are playing and the 'cordean is background. I have some great old accordian music on homemade tape and cd...how about Repasz Band?

I haven't yet seen/heard that particular commercial. PLEASE tell me the gecko isn't polka-ing. I can't stand him! Although now that I think about it, that actually would be pretty funny.
Back on topic, I've heard Clarinet Polka played on accordian as well, but this guy definitely played it in "our key" of concert Bb/Eb--I watched his fingers!

There are at least a dozen commericals out now that use clarinet as the main instrument.....I should start writing them down so I can post. HMMM...

The Shmenge bros are up in northern Wisconsin ice fishing and enjoying cabbage rolls and coffee. Stan is recovering from another clarinet in the eye accident. My favoriet Duo.
