Has anyone else seen or heard of the new student-strength reeds made by Legere? I think they are seriously going to become a hit with school band directors, and they seem to sound at least as good if not better than the original Legeres. What makes it an exceptional deal, is that they are about 1/2 the cost of the normal Legere reeds. One of my clarinet students asked me to get one for her (constant reed drying out problems, both in lessons and in school), but, as I had planned to get her one of the premium reeds and then found these, I got her two (one of #2, one #2 1/2) for the price of one.

I did notice them on the legere website when I visited. Sounds like a great idea and a very strong market to get into, if they can indeed get into it. This would be BEGGED for during marching band seasons in high school/college.
I like the legere reeds. I haven't tried a student brand, but hopefully it goes over well.

Legere is one of the advertizers, under "Reeds" over to your right.
This link will take you right to their "Student Reeds" promo.

My experience with the company, so far, has been 100% favorable.

On the bright side, it's good to have consistent reeds for beginners and not deplete the Var Valley with overproduced Vandorens. And I'm sure that parents will be glad for the possibility of tougher, more durable reeds. Heck, I use the things myself in a lot of doubling situations.
But I worry a bit that in those early stages, the kids won't learn to deal with the realities of cane reeds. That psychological addiction to Vandorens could become a serious one-track dependency on Legere--particularly if some band directors view it as a one-size-fits-all solution.

I think that the new venture into the student Legere reed is a smart move of their part. It opens up a potential market to get decent reeds that are not sensitive to the environmental and physical traumas that beset most beginning and progressing students, as well as the special needs of marching band use. I have no connection with the Legere people but it may be a similar situation of producing a volume market as the contact lens people faced.
I do have friends in the scientific end of the contact lens market and the "disposable" contacts that sell for less money than the traditional "clean and coddle" lens decided to open a new market in disposable lens. I asked what the quality differences in the two brands was and the truthful answer was that indeed they were the same contact lens but just marketed differently. The cost of producing a contact lens is so miniscule that other factors such as marketing, advertising, professional kickbacks, etc. is the major cost and not the item itself.
I do not know about the Legere student reed but the manufacturing process must be very similar to the "expensive" brand.
