What is the "normal" barrel length, or what length do most people use? My barrel is 62 mm, and seems shorter than most. Do longer barrels drastically affect tuning?
edited because I accidently put 62CM instead of 62MM. lol, I see the problem in reaching the keys.

Normal depends on the make/model of your clarinet. In other words, how did the designer decide to build it? Standard for a Buffet R13 Bb clarinet is (I think) 66mm.

Check your tuning with a tuner. If it's ok, then just let it be. You may have a situation where you have a slightly longer upper joint and a slightly shorter barrel to compensate for it. But I too think the "standard" for Bb R13 is 66. I seem to remember this because I remember that the A clarinet is 65. And to me it always seemed bass-ackwards.

62 cm??? Wow- how do you reach the keys?! :-)
But seriously- what kind of clarinet do you have? Some clarinets are made with barrels as short as 56mm, others as long as 67mm. You need the correct barrel length for your instrument.

Current Yamaha barrel very short.
Moennig used a 67 taper cone on the R13 but shortened the bell joint.
Normal is what is needed for you to be in tune. Size ...ahem....may not matter.

Okay, finally get a chance to reply-
I play a Selmer 9*. The barrel is about 4 cm shorter than my plastic one, a Yamaha YCL-26 (my marching horn), which is why I raised the question. It actually tends to play a little flat, under normal conditions.

Selmer barrels I've seen were marked if they were anything other than standard length. For instance, 2mmS would indicate that the barrel was 2mm shorter than standard for that instrument. If you're at 62mm and still playing a bit flat, you might have the correct barrel but have a mouthpiece that tends toward the flat side. Do you have any markings on the barrel? It should at least have the Selmer logo and 9* on it if it is original.

The barrel definately has the Selmer Paris logo, and I can't remember if it has the 9* on it or not (I dont have my cl on hand), but I believe it is the original. The mouthpiece I use on it is a Selmer HS*. I also have a mouthpiece that has the Selmer HS** on the table, but someone re-faced it and I don't like how it plays, even though it tends to play a little more in tune. Does anyone have experience with this mouthpiece tending to play flat?
