Recently got a nearly new Yamaha YCL 280 (plastic) eefer. Came with a 40mm barrel, and plays VERY sharp.....some experiments with a friend's stock of extra bits showed that a 42mm barrel seemed about right. Yamaha doesn't seem to have them- does anyone stock a suitable barrel at a reasonable price? I don't need fancy custom exotic wood or luxury features, just a plain barrel that will get the tuning right. Plastic is OK with me.

We have a number of mp/barrel makers in our classifieds. If it were me, I'd ask one or a couple for advice and plan to invest a few more $'s and get a "custom" specifically tuned to your E, which in my experience is a much more demanding inst for intonation/response than a Bb cl. Just thots, Don

On second thot, S L, if all that is needed is 2 mm, why not try some tuning rings, I'd get perhaps a 1mm and 2, 1/2 mm thick ones. You might measure some mp lengths, looking for a slughtly longer one which might do. Don

Robert Scott makes an inexpensive plastic barrel which is available from some of the mail-order retailers -- I got a 44mm one that works great (I believe it came from Muncy Winds).

i reccently bought a Scott barrel for my Buffet E flat clarinet- it plays quite well, at first seems more resistant than the Buffet barrel but once you get used to it this presents no real problem. The tuning is better than with the stock buffet barrel, and with E flat clarinets this is worth paying for!
that being said- Scott barrels are very economically priced, however do inspect the barrel for little defects- they are sometimes not meticulously finished (in particular, check for "burrs" in the socket/bore)

Yes, in this instance.
The eefer is a plastic one. Likely serviceable, but someday you will want the sweet sound of an RC or Recital Eefer.....so Why spend big bucks now.
Save yer cash and do the following:
Try some tuning rings....make them from end of plastic mouthpiece tenon, sand to size. Cheap, easy, it works ok and will not do any irreversible harm.

Thanks, again, guys. I went ahead and ordered both the 43mm Scott barrel and the tuning rings- Muncy Winds gave me a two-week trial period, so we'll see what works. I'll let you know how it goes....
