difference between regular Vandoren and Vandoren V12?
Author: choey

i have a vandoren reed and would like to buy the same ones, but it seems like there are regular Vandoren reeds and Vandoren V12 reeds.

although my vandoren reed holder that came with the reed (i bought an individual reed) has a V sign, i cannot tell whether it's V12.

on the reed itself, it just says "FRANCE !#%@#% Vandoren/Paris".

a reed strength chart i saw said that V12s are about .5 harder than the regular ones... so i wanted to make sure that i buy the right thing.

thanks.

All I know is that I prefer the V12s over the regular vandorens. I don't know any of the technical details, though. I play on V12 3.5s.

BTW, the regulars are in a dark blue box, the V12s are in a silver one. And my V12s don't say "V12" on the reed, so I don't know how to tell, either.

If you can find a V12 reed or a traditional reed compare them to your reed. The V12 reeds are much thicker than the traditionals. If you are not sure best is to find both and compare both to your reed.
From what I understand (from others and from the Vandoren website) the traditionals are the harder ones by a half strength, not the V12s.

Also look at the scoring (where the reed vamp ends) - the V-12's are much more finished and tapered.

I like the way they feel and are balanced, but don't like their sound as much as the regular nor the Grand Concert Reed. Though if I had to play Vandoren it would be the V-12.

The Vandoren V12s are made from thicker blanks; if you hold them up and look at the butt end there is a definite difference in the thickness; you have to loosen your ligature screws a bit more to accomodate them.

They are softer than the regular blue box Vandorens. I was using them for awhile but have switched to Gonzales FOF, and when I can't get those I use Rico Grand Concerts. Right now I have six boxes of Gonzalez reeds though, so I will be ok for awhile. [happy]
