 Clarinet nerds - With attitude?
Author: contragirl
Date:   2005-01-31 07:50

Hey all,
I am seriously considering getting a tattoo of a treble clef. I've been thinking about it for years, and outside of my dad and grandma, I am the only one in my family without a tattoo! (Yes, even my mom has tattoos, but they are tasteful and can be hidden)

Anyway, I am thinking of getting it on my ankle or somewhere that I can hide it easily. This is a big decision and I want to have something that expresses my love for music forever!

Does anyone else have any "nerdy" tattoos?

I personally don't like tattoos at all, but if you are going to have one, please choose something more original than the very corny treble clef. Sorry if I sound rude but this is what I think.

How about a few measures of music? I always said that if I got a tattoo I would get the first to measures of Bach's Goldber Variations.

There was a french horn player here who got the first few bars of a horn concerto on the small of her back.

If I were you, I would try for something more original, or at the very least, either design the clef yourself or have it designed for you. My issue with tatoos is that I don't want to meet up with someone some day who goes "oh! I have the exact same...!!!" Know what I mean??

Good luck!

CG,

Try this, take one of those washoff tats that you can get at headsheads (actually, the Toledo Museum of Art has early Eqyptian ones for sale) and put it on in a very obvious place. I put my Egyptian Lion on the inside of my left forearm.

After a week, I was tired of it. In two weeks, I used alcohol to remove it. I found out quickly that I was not a tattoo-guy (I secretly knew this all along).

You'll be able to see if you like the concept without any pain and for just a few dollars.

'Course, instead of the treble clef you could get a base clef tattoo.

Then you will REALLY be sending a message. Possibly even two of them simultaneously!

If you must get a tattoo - make it small.

Like National Debt, they have a tendency to get larger over time.

My Grandfather had a patrol boat on his shoulder as a young man, this wee tub grew into a battleship in his later years.

*******

Seriously, Tatts are permanent Body Art, you can't just take it off.

It's up to you whether you want to get a tattoo and what of. I understand that you love music and want to show it off. Like Clarnibass/Vermont mentioned, it'd be nice to have a UNIQUE tattoo so think about designing a treble clef (maybe with notes floating around it) or having one designed.

I myself have tattoos. However I stick to tribal art as I like the designs and contours. I had all of mine custom designed.

I've been toying with the idea of one day getting "Kokopelli" put somewhere on me (maybe a shoulder).

I plan on designing my own tattoo anyway, so it will hopefullt be original. And I do want it to be fairly small (about 2 inches?).

I actually designed my mom's tattoo. It's the Pillsbury Doughboy flexing his muscles, and under it, it has my dad's initials. Cuz my mom called my dad the Pillsbury Doughboy. :) It's really cute and original.

I was thinking of putting some bars of music, but I think that may be too long. For the treble clef, I was trying to think of some tribal looking, original pretty design to create.

I met a person that had a tattoo of a fairy playing a clarinet on her arm. That was way too much for me. hahaha

John, what are you trying to tell us? Something subliminal or just bad spelling?
"'Course, instead of the treble clef you could get a base clef tattoo.

How really BASE is your BASS clef? All inquiring bass clarinet players want to know!

My friend who plays violin in my band has a treble clef on a shoulder. However, she got it done by a less-than-talented tat artist somewhere in the middle of nowhere, so it has issues. It's raised and blurry-looking, and none of the tat artists here in the Twin Cities will attempt to cover it or add to it or improve it.

Just make sure you have a decent artist, ContraGirl! (I'm assuming you do, what with all of the tat history in your family! ;) )

I think all tatoos are corny and outdated. Everyone seems to have them. Everyone thinks theirs are the most original. They used to be special when only some people had them but now they are just a stupid thing to do to your body. They seem to be the horrible bumpersticker for the body. Every other person has "tribal art" tatoos and it just seems like a bad hair doo or something (that you can't get rid of). They want to show off their bod and you just end up saying "oh boy, not another "original" tatoo show!"Today its the tribal art type of tatoo and yesterday was the oriental characters and before that it was the dancing houla-girl and if you think your tatoos are not corny or stupid today, wait a few years. I should also state that I have both arms totally tatooed with little skin showing. Every tatoo I have has a special meaning. I also have tatoos in other places of my body that only "special" people get to see. Maybe I am just getting old and regret having something that everyone stares at but I would not get any tatoos if I could start over. I say forget even a treble cleff, but if you are going to get one, a treble cleff is no more and no less original than "tribal art" or a butterfly. I still respect the desicion of anyone that has tats. Don't mean to sound so negative.

As an ex-sailor ...

I've seen my share of excellent body paintings. Glad I didn't get one, but some are drop-dead gorgeous. A drinking buddy of mine in Japan was yakuza. Real irezumi on his body, not the wannabe stuff. Fantastic.

Bob A:

None of my clarinet books have BASS clefs in them - naturally - so I spell phonetically.

But I'll let you work on the double message (base as it is)

Why not get a tattoo of a clarinet in the middle of your forhead ... that's a very inconspicuous place I think

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

Several years ago we had colleague with tats all over her body. We called her Ms. Rose Tattoo. I never bothered to know what her real name was coz at that time you didn't have to. Now you can't get way with that since almost every other chick is a "Ms. Rose Tattoo".

Hey Contragirl,
When i was at conservatory, there was this dude with a really dorky tattoo of a clarinet all over his back. This guy doesn't even play anymore, and also smelt rather bad.

I must paraphrase Matt Groening on the subject of tattoos:

Here's your chance to make a trendy fashion statement that will last a lifetime!

I think the "attitude" factor of tattoos has waned in recent years. The "cool" factor is still there for some people, but I wouldn't say "attitude."

I have a positive view of tattoos in general. That being said, I agree with everything Dano wrote, especially concerning "tribal art" (ah, yes; that would be the ancient and revered Tribe of the White Middle-class Eighteen-year-olds Who, in their Desire to Assert Themselves as Special and Unique, Get a Black Graphic Tattoo Devoid of Meaning just like Everyone Else in their Freshman Dorm).

A close friend of mine who is originally from Japan often bursts out laughing at some of the Kanji tattoos she sees on Americans. They usually don't mean exactly what their exhibitors think they do. One that sticks out in my memory translated roughly as "open the bird's mouth". Good times!

A treble clef is not bad at all by comparison.

hm.... let's say years from now, God forbid, you start to hate music and clarinets? You'll have a tattoo that you hate stuck on your body. 'Tis permanant, well pretty much unless you decide to pay more money to get it removed. Of course, you've already thought of that, but just pointing it out again. Well, whatever you do choose wisely.

I didn't want a tattoo that would stand out or draw too much attention to itself, so I got one that looks exactly like a freckle.

I liked it so much, I later got a larger tattoo on my back that is exactly the same color as my skin.

Okay..
I have to "weigh" in on this....me and the boys in the band (60s rock and roll) had our right fore arms tatted with roses.....sort of a gang thing..I guess. Needs to be re-colored after 30 years. but I love it. Also have a butterfly from Lyle tuttLe...(my first) and he was the man! Tatted Cher's butt! And became THE man for tats in the 70's.
I don't like tats just for tats. But I do appreciate the artwork. I've seen some exceptional work.
THE LAST SUPPER on a dudes back and it was a work of art. It was Michealangelo quality. A friend has an octopus wrapped around his calf and it is beautiful.
Tattoos can be really beautiful.
A buddy who is in radio....said his name and wifes and childs into COOL edit
(a program for recording stufff)......and copied it ...took the transcription to the tatooist and had it tattoed around his bicept. Exceptional.
Tattoos aren't for everyone. But if you decide to have a body print....make sure.....YOU'RE SURE..........

"THE LAST SUPPER on a dudes back and it was a work of art."

In my opinion that is the exact opposite of art.

I have two tats, one in the palm of each hand. They were self-inflicted when, twice, I was holding a pencil with the point toward my palm and walked into a wall....

That's the extent of my 'tude, dude.

Wow Ken. While I was reading it I thought you were going to go the way of stigmata. I have to say I am a little relieved that they are from pencils.
