Puszta - Jan Van Der Roost
Author: sanya

Alright, so, have any of you ever played Puszta, by Jan Van Der Roost? In the third movement, there is a little section that is improvised by a solo clarinet. I don't play this solo in the band that I am playing this with -- some guy does, and he's always 2% ahead of me, so I'm trying to prove I can play it. Silly, I know. Anyway, this part is played super fast, and when he plays it, it sounds clear and distinct and wonderful. When I play it, the notes mush into each other and it sounds like crap. Anyone know why?

Hmm...the band that I am in is playing this at our music festival. Our solo clarinetist is also very good at this part. The only thing I could suggest is working on the fingerings for the whole section, first at a slow speed, then gradually increasing it until it is at full speed.

Sanya, is the improvised solo you are referring to at the beginning of the 3rd movement? I played it as written, so out of curiousity I'd love to know other interpretations/improvisations.

As to your question, maybe you are playing so fast that your tongue & fingers aren't totally coordinated. Try practicing slowly at first, gradually increasing speed. My director described this solo as similar to the beginining of Rhapsody in Blue.

BTW, I do not think it is silly to work on a solo even if someone else will be playing it. You are simply trying to improve yourself. Plus, you never know if the soloist will miss a rehearsel <g>.

I thought this was a fun piece. Good luck with it & let me know how it goes.

We did this in State-Honours band a few years ago, and i was also the one sitting by while another clarinettist did the solo! The only advice i can give is to practice it slowly and let your fingers figure out what they have to do befoe you make them do it up to speed.
Great piece tho!

Thanks, guys! I think I was trying to play it a little too fast -- that's what I get for always trying to compete with him. ;) Dori, I am referring to that but I guess it is not improvised then. I was just going with what I was told by people sitting around me, and like they know what they're talking about anyway. I'm pretty sure my fingers and tongue aren't totally in sync though, so I'll keep trying.

Thank you again, and in response to all of you, I know! I love this piece!
