 Vibrato on the Alto
Author: BassClarinetGirl

I'm having problems with playing with more vibrato on the Alto clarinet. I get great vibrato on my bass- the horn practically plays vibrato all the time by itself- but i can't get it to sound good on alto. I want to use it in Alfred Reed's Serenata in the slow parts, and I also need to play with more when I play with the saxes in band. For the record, I don't play with any vibrato on my Bb, but all the time with my tenor sax. Any suggestions?

Lock yourself in your bedroom (bathroom?) and listen to six hours of Kenny G records. That'l make your jaws quiver!

Hi BCG, Playing only a very little on alto cl, mostly on bass but with years on soprano, I hadn't given vibrato much thot, it seemed [as you observed] to come easily on fairly wide-lay bass mps. Not playing much "real jazz", just a bit of Dixie, I struggle to get a decent vib on sop. Since the physical size of the AC mp is not much more than the sop, and the bass mp is nearly as large as the old bari sax mps, larger than the bari "slim-jims", I believe that's my vib problem with alto. I guess that about all I can suggest is "our" going to a wider/longer lay mps [I like my Pomarico glass 3 mellow] and play a bit like an alto sax [heresy, I'm sure]. Try it, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

arg- since my dad owns practically everything Kenny G ever played on CD, i'm sure could do that too! but for now I think I'll just keep experimenting- maybe see if I can scrounge up another mouthpiece from the band room at school.

thanks!

BCG - why do you need to play with vibrato at all? Play with a beautiful sound and shape your phrases and you'll be fine.

"why do you need to play with vibrato at all?"

I'm guessing she doesn;t need to play with vibrato, she wants to.

About the Kenny G suggestion, suicide rate among those who listened to Kenny G is higher so I would avoid that :)

The bigger question is "Why would anyone need to play alto clarinet?" [wink] ...GBK
