Woodwind Case Vs. BAM Trekking Case
Author: bkmorton

I am interested in getting a double case that has room for my accessories. I have the double breifcase that leblanc makes but it doesn't hold my music, clarinet stand, and 10-reed case. I am interested in the Bam trekking case but it is REALLY expensive. The Woodwind case is dirt cheap and looks pretty similar (from the pictures online). Could anyone give me a comparison with the room for accessories? Thanks

I started a thread on the Woodwind double case the other day. Only one person responded saying that they've tried the case. They said the liked the case, it held up good for the time they used it, and that there was plenty of room for extras.

If you give it a try, let me know how it works out....the price is unbeatable.

Bk- I have the BAM Trekking, but was considering getting a Leblanc Double and then a case cover to protect it and contain all my stuff (The BAM and other similar cases are heavy and big in comparison to many cases on the market). WOuldn't getting a case cover be an option for you?

The Woodwind case does have a nice big compartment inside for reeds, tuner, etc etc etc, and a large zippered pocket on the outside. This pocket has plenty of room for a music folder, but I would say it does not have room for a wire music stand, as the pocket is rather flat against the body of the case....you could probably force one in there, but it would likely rip the pocket after awhile.

I own the BAM case that holds the two horns and I would agree that it is expensive and it can get pretty heavy once it's filled to capacity. The BAM case has great pockets for all kinds of music and accessories and you have the choice of either using a shoulder strap or using it like a back-pak.

You might want to think about just getting a regular double-case [either the pouchette Buffet or Leblanc] and just using a messenger bag made by either Timbuk2 or Chrome. I own a Chrome bag and I can fit a single clarinet case with lots of stuff. I own the Metropolis and I'm pretty sure you can fit a double in there. If not, they do have a bigger model to choose from. Check it out.

I find the Leblanc double case to be very heavy in comparison to the BAM Trekking (which I use). I have an unused, brand new Leblanc double case and it's just collecting dust.
Oh, one other reason why I do not use the Leblanc case. The silver rings on the barrells get scratched because the holes you put 'em in aren't covered in fabric.

I just want everything as compact as can be with one bag that holds everything. I do have a single buffet case and an LL BEAN bag that it fits in. It is ok and works now but I figured why not.

FYI--I use the LeBlanc standard double case with an Altieri case cover and there is ample space to carry all my extras--music, tuner, clarinet stand (single), Harrison reed case, toothbrush, book to read during "strings only", etc. The weight of my case set-up when fully "loaded" is only slightly heavier than comparable equipement carried in a Bam-style case. I know this because I have compared my case to my stand partners new ProTech. However, my case, even with just the clarinets and mouthpieces, is still much too heavy (for me) to carry around the airport between flights, so I use a soft-side Yamaha double case and pack a lot of my extra equipement in my checked luggage when traveling.

My solution is to use the smallest, thinnest case I could find (one of those old things with a swell to accomodate the bell shape). Then I chose from amongst the vast number of available shoulder bags to carry it. Those bags are everywhere, and there are pretty good ones available as freebies at conventions, etc. I got a leather one at a white elephant sale for $5 which carries lots of music, reed cases etc. There must have been 30 of those bags at the sale. For the skinny clarinet case go to a repair place that manages the horns of a large school district.
