 Lelandias Saxophone MPC

I've come across a Lelandias saxophone mouthpiece that I'm trying to get some information on. The piece has a shield with the initials AL on it. In addition, there is a signature of A Lelandias, Paris, Recital. It's a size 8. Clearly, the mouthpiece is faced for tenor saxophone reeds. It's length is a tad shorter than one of my Morgan tenor mouthpieces and, roughly eye-balling it, it appears that the chamber may not be quite as large as the Morgan.

The person I purchased it from got it on ebay and it was listed as a tenor mouthpiece. But, he said that it had problematic intonation on his tenor. He then thought that it might be a c-melody mouthpiece. So, it was on that basis that I became interested in the mouthpiece. Now that the mouthpiece arrived, it doesn't look like a c-melody mouthpiece to me. It's length is longer than what I would expect and it's chamber seems too small to me. Thus, I'm thinking that it's a tenor mouthpiece.

Regardless, this is a really interesting piece! If anyone is familiar with Lelandias saxophone mouthpieces, I'd appreciate it if you could give me more information about them. I'm especially curious about the time frame that it might be from.

Thanks, Roger

I've refaced a few of them (and play occasionally on a more recent Lelandais tenor mouthpiece) --- they're nice blanks but the factory facings (in my limited experience) have been nothing to write home about.

David,

Thanks for the reply! I just realized that I mis-spelled Lelandais. Duh! Do you have a ballpark sense of when Lelandais saxophone mouthpieces were produced? The tenor mouthpiece I have doesn't appear to be a truly old vintage piece. I'm thinking 60's perhaps. I haven't had any luck doing a Google search on Lelandais mouthpiece as a way to get more information about the saxophone pieces.

Thanks! Roger

Roger, I don't know much about the Lelandais except how to spell it and how to reface it! I think they've been around a while, and possibly your 1960s guess isn't too far off the mark. You might try some French sources --- maybe you could email (in French if you can) Fred Lebayle ---- his own mouthpieces (by the way) are quite good and he may know some history of Lelandais, being a Frenchman and all that..........
