Just a simple question... When auditioning in front of a large crowd (the group your auditioning to play a solo with) would it be a good idea to take a bow?

That's the first thing I thought of too. I've played band transcriptions of orchestral works (like William Tell or Semiramide) and think "I'm sure bowing is MUCH easier than all this tonguing is..."
Back on track, I agree with the head not and maybe an audible "Thank you" for good measure.

If you're going to take a bow, do it right. Stand up straight, look at your feet, and stand up straight again. Nothing looks sillier, IMHO, than an embarrassed sort of half-bow, half-not-bow, as if you want to do it but aren't sure you should.

I would say take a nice bow...there's nothing nicer than someone who honestly acknowledges the praise of the audience, no matter who it is. You know the nice kind...bow, 1, 2, 3, up.

Hi,
The bow stuff takes me back to my first piano lessons at the Patterson School of Music in Sandusky, OH and the dreaded first recital. I think I as well as every other young lad wanted to play "From a Wigwam" found on the last page of John Thompson Book 1. The girls always played something quite lovely.
After being announced by Mrs. Patterson, you came out of the doorway from the back of the studio, put your arm on the top of the piano, said "I shall play....", bowed from the waist, had at it, got up and took another bow always to wild applause (at least that's how I remember it).
But that was a very,very long time ago!

PS Man, I have not thought about that stuff for years; perhaps there are others on the BB that remember "From a Wigwam." I think I could play it today along with the unintentional retard in the middle section.
