I just picked up one of these today. It is used and needs a little work, but overall it plays okay. The question that I have for those who know is how old is this horn? In reading about this horn in the archives, I read something about the older instruments ot being so good, but that the newer ones were quite nice. The serial number on this horn is 006444. Any info regarding the approximate age of this instrument would be helpful. If it appears that I have found one of the older ones of less quality, please let me know; I have 30 days to return it if necessary.
Also, if I end up keeping it...is there now available a longer barrel made by Amati and if so, how much are they?

I'm not certain how the serial numbers for Amati run, and if the different series (200, 400, 600) have their own unique number sequence.
I have an Amati ACL675 (Full Boehm A clarinet) with the serial number of 603xxx and it was made in 2000.

My Amati 604 is 204xxx series. They redid their sometime in early to mid 90's if I remember correctly. They make a little more than 7000 clarinets a year. So doing some rough math with the 604 serial number (making a TON of assumptions, like clarinets being numbered sequentially and about 7k made a year) this would mean that the clarinet you have would have been made fairly long ago (a little under 30 years ago). Which means, unfortunately, you probably don't have the latest vintage after they redid the factories.
In any event, Amati was formed in 1940s, and that is a fairly low serial number so chances are pretty good that it wasn't made after the retooling of the factory and new government over there in the Czech Republic.
However, it doesn't hurt to double check with Graham or Amati headquarters. With 30 days, you should have more than enough time.
