So I'm in the process of buying a Buffet Clarinet... pretty old. I think it's an E13... Buffet Evette-Schaeffer I think? Serial number - K43054... can anyone shed any light on its age for me?

Until the Music Group gets their serial number search back up and running, these are the best I am aware of:
http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/Equipment/HowOld/Buffet.html
http://www.musictrader.com/buffet.html
There are lists for E13's at both sites (mostly Evette & Schaeffers - both lists end in the 1980's). Both leave off the K prefix. According to these lists, the clarinet you're interested in was probably made in 1977 or perhaps 1978. As clarinets go, I think that's recent enough for it to be considered a "modern" instrument, i.e., not many significant design changes, if any.
Best regards,

I have a buffet K series E&S (slightly older than yours, K2 something). It's excellent. Better than most clarinets I've played. So just give it a fair listening to and you'll hopefully be pleasantly surprised.

PS - Just enter the serial number Buffet's list without the K and under the E13 list. That will tell you its age. Mine was 1970 if I remember correctly.
