A couple o' years, maybe less with good behavior, for stealing that much money and "blowing" it seems way too lenient to me.

As a former apathetic member of the teamsters union all I can say is you get for leadership what you vote for and don't expect any sympathy from me. So John J. Moses when is the last time you went to a union meeting, ran for office or even bothered to vote?

A great teacher gives you answers to questions
you don't even know you should ask.

Hi bill28099:
"So John J. Moses when is the last time you went to a union meeting, ran for office or even bothered to vote?"
Thanks for asking. I have been a Union activist for 35+ years. I have voted at every election since the mid-1960's. I've been active in 3 different Musician Locals, and am still an active member of Local 802 & 16. I was the chairman of 3 symphony orchestras, and on many committees at Local 802. I helped to draft the current Broadway contract, and was an advisor to the recent free-lance contract here in NYC. I have been at hundreds of Union meetings, and on countless picket lines, defending the rights of my fellow members.
I was one of many who questioned Mr. Steele's dealings with our Union's Special Payment Funds. He was caught, and we may now get some justice and remuneration. I assume you are also very active in your hometown local? Please let us know what you've done to help our fellow musicians and musician's causes.
PS I was also a proud member of the Teamsters in Detroit, when I worked at the Ford Motor Plant.

Well, that would be the answer to a question that shouldn't have been asked in the first place. Thanks for a gentlemanly response, John. Glad to see that sleeze will be a' Sing Sing'ing ...

Obviously an insurance policy is in existence and people like him are the cause of extra high premiums. But as far as his punishment, GOD will take care of everything.

I think this Mr. GOD is a member in good standing of the Chapter 666 of the Amalgamated Faith, Theology, Superstition and Latherers Union. He attends all meetings and always votes. Just hope his hand isn't in the till either.

John Moses - keep the faith brother!

In Dante's Inferno, the fraudulent are sent to the 8th level (of 9).

"Some wallow in human excrement. Serpents writhe and wrap around men, sometimes fusing into each other. Bodies are torn apart. When you arrive, you will want to put your hands over your ears because of the lamentations of the sinners here, who are afflicted with scabs like leprosy, and lay sick on the ground, furiously scratching their skin off with their nails. Indeed, justice divine doth smite them with its hammer."

Actually, I think it is:

"Some wallow in the saxophone section. Euphonium players writhe and wrap around men, sometimes playing duets with each other. Clarinets are torn apart. When you arrive, you will want to put your hands over your ears because of the sound of alto clarinet players here, who are afflicted with reeds from saxophones, and make others sick on the ground, furiously clawing at their ears with their nails. Indeed, justice divine doth smite them with its baton."

[whoa] Yikes, either way, Mark or Ken, it makes one want to stay on the narrow path! The part about the eternal euphonium duets is particularly frightening.

Thanks JJM, a true gentleman and a monster musician.

Mr. Moses, what a great response to my somewhat snide question, thank you.
Since I have never played for pay nor do I plan to in the future I have no intention of becoming involved with the local musicians union. My only support for local musicians will remain at the box office. I am happy to hear that someone in their youth had a good experience with the teamsters union, mine might have been memorable but it was far from positive and quickly taught me to remain apathetic.

you don't even know you should ask.

JM--thanks for your dedication and timely updates.

MC--your comment was unnecessary and may be inflamatory to some. But thanks, also, for keeping this BB "heavenly" for all of us. :>)

Bill said in part:
"....quickly taught me to remain apathetic...."
That's how upwards of 60 million gets spent on Republican ball-room dancing, and security for all the lords and ladies.

Bob - well said.

That being said, you can expect this discussion to be closed down soon and also expect an email from Mark cautioning you to keep a lid on the politics (if not, let me know - I'd love to continue the politico-clarineting discourse).

Hi bill28099:
Thanks for your kind words.
I'm sorry your experience with the Union has not been a good one.
I would just like all the younger, great players out there on the BBoard to know the benefits of membership in the Musician's Union.
There are certainly problems from Local to Local, but with constant vigilance and participation, we can all make this a better place to make music.

Thanks for the excellent post JJM...

Sadly there is corruption in the rank and file of just about any large organization. Of course it may explain why some royalties are not as quick to make it in the mailbox.

I would also not hesitate to add to what JJM said..my experience as a Union musician and performer has been great!

I am grateful to those who have contributed to the success of unions. They are responsible for much of the safety and worker protection legislation that we have today. Some have died for it; e.g., the Winnipeg General Strike in 1919, where two strikers were killed by federal police to break the strike.
Union membership was once a criminal offence, which shows how far our society has progressed.
