It seems to me that while companies put serial numbers on almost ALL their clarinets, regardless of models and anything else, it seems next to impossible to find a serial number list denoting age for lots of models.
Does anyone have any idea why a company would bother putting a serial number on their clarinets but not have any record on their website (or even sometimes when contacting them through email) as to what clarinet was a product of what year? I just couldn't understand putting a sequenced number on the clarinet unless they are going to document somewhere that it WAS in fact made and some sort of information as to its making.

You can find a significant listing of serial numbers at http://www.musictrader.com/serialnos.html. This is not a complete listing (for instance many early Kohlert records were lost when the Nazis took over the factory), but you may find it quite useful.
If nothing else, a serial number provides a positive identification of an instrument. When that is needed, it would usually be a repair shop or police department that would need the information and not the factory. You should have the serial numbers recorded in a safe place so that you can positively identify your own instrument.

Companies have been marking serial numbers on musical instruments far longer than websites, or computers for that matter, have been in existance. While they probably did record this information, it was likely handwritten on cards or sheets of paper.
The manufacturer may not think it is worthwhile (profit or otherwise) to go through the trouble of researching every instrument they ever made and then inputting this information into a computer. Replying to a request regarding a specific serial number may not be as simple as typing a few numbers on a keyboard.
We are getting so spoiled living in this "Information Age" with so much information at our fingertips.
