 stuffy E on Bass Clarinet

A friend has a newer top of the line Buffet Bass Clarinet with a stuffy sounding first line E. The notes around it are fine. Any theories as to the cause? What can be done? Thanks.

My first instinct would be to remove the keywork down to the point where you can get a good, close look at the pad that closes the hole that sounds the E. I had a similar problem with my below the staff B natural, but was told by many different repair people that everything was fine. When I finally found the guy who was willing to do more than a cursory examination and leak test, he identified a scotched pad over the hole in question, replaced it and bingo - no problem.

The Eb pad may be set too low. Or there may be some kind of "gunk" left in the tone hole from manufacturing. Just some possibilities. I have a Buffet Prestige as well and my E4 has no problem such as you describe. It can probably be easily corrected. My fav repairperson for my bass clarinet is Tom Fritz at IMS in DesPlaines, Il.

First, check the pads that are open just below. If one is bulging, it may interfere with the venting. Second, bass clarinet pad heights are often not set properly. Opening up the clearance of the pads may help, though you'll need to check the clarion high B to make sure it doesn't go sharp. Usually this can be done with the adjusting screws or by sanding down the bumper corks.

A "newer" Buffet should still be under warranty. I'd get in touch with Francois Kloc, who has been good about warranty repairs. Better yet, if you're near a place where Buffet holds one of its roving instrument displays, Francois will probably be there and will fix any Buffet on the spot at no charge, even it it's out of warranty.

mouthpiece or reed strength may not suit the new instrument. Worth experimenting, starting with slightly softer reeds.
