 Eric dolphy's bass clarinet
Author: clarnibass

Hi
I searched on this forum and the web and all the information I could find is Dolphy's bass clarinet was a Selmer low Eb model.
I just got a new CD with Eric on it and he plays a low D on the bass clarinet. Does anyone know what kind of bass clarinet did he have? I'm pretty sure it was a Selmer but that is the only thing I know.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I remember seeing one Dolphy album cover on which he was playing a Leblanc bass clarinet (low-Eb model).
Maybe to get the low D he used the trick of dropping a cardboard toilet paper roll tube or a mouthpiece cap into the bell. and fingering low-Eb.
