Specs for GG #1 Crystal Mpc- bass clarinet
Author: Michelle

Does anyone here know the dimensions of the GG #1 crystal mpc for bass clarinet? I'm using one and I like it. I'm also curious what else would be comparable to it.

thanks... Michelle

I believe the GGs were made by Pomarico, and if so yours is likely to be equivalent to a Pomarico #1.

Hi Dave- Did you measure the curve of mine, before refacing it to your fav facing, the #1 was good, but yours is better [about their #3?. TKS, again, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Don,
I wish I could answer that, but I don't use measurements at all when I reface --- just eye, hand, and play-test. I don't remember if I opened up the tip significantly on your GG, but I can almost guarantee I lengthened the facing (rails) and made the rails symmetric.

I have a Pomarico 2, Pomarico 3, Pomarico HB, and a Pomarico refaced by David Spiegelthal. I can say the 2 and 3 are a little similar, except the 2 is slightly less open. The refaced is very different from the 3.
The 2 works with around strength 3 reeds. The 3 works with strength 2.5-3 reeds. The refaced works with around strength 4 reeds. You can see from that they are very different.

I'm comapring the tip and facing length right now, and the tip opening on Pomarico 3 is a lot more than on the Spiegelthal refaced. The 2 and 3 has almost the same tip. The facing length on the refaced is much longer than either the 2 or 3.

The original mouthpiece David refaced for me is very strange. It's a Pomarico 0 (the number zero, not the letter O) model. I never heard of Pomarico making a 0 model, but that is what's written on the mouthpiece. Someone bought it for me in Italy. Does anyone know anything about this model?

Don, do you play your Pomarico bass mouthpiece (refaced by David)? What reeds do you use with it?

When I received the 0 refaced mouthpiece (which was unplayable before, it was way too closed) from David, I didn't notice any improvement. The hardest reeds I had were 3s and it didn't play at all with strengh 3 reeds. I asked David about it, and he said he refaced it to be like his (although I specifically asked for something else, but that is a different story) and he uses 4 or 4.5 reeds with it. Only a few months ago I got a hold of a strength 4 bass clarinet reed and the mouthpiece played fine with it.
