I tried a friends new R-13 Vintage and noticed that it was far easier and more comfortable to play than my R-13 or any of my clarinets. The keys are just where I like them and have such perfect movement and the intonation is right on. As far as I know she hasn't had any work done on it. I am trying to justify buying one or not buying one. I certainly don't need another clarinet (then again everyone needs another clarinet) Does anyone love or hate their R-13 Vintage? If so, why? Try and convince me either way. Thanks.

I have, and regularily play, a R-13 Vintage which IMHO is a great horn. There are good ones and not so good ones just as in any other spectrum of instruments in a model series. There are fantastic regular R-13's and bummers. A model with a few different features - some differences in the keys and tone hole placements (supposed improvements) and a little higher price does not a great horn make. It is a matter of preference - I have tried friend's R-13's, a new Selmer Signature, and a Concerto II that were all very good sounding and playing instruments. Each has a little different sound signature and key-feel but all very good professional grade instruments. If you like the feel and sound of the Vintage you might consider testing out several or having your teacher or professional player aid you in the selection if you have a bad case of the "want-me's". Having another clarinet in the stable is not a mortal sin if you can afford it and really like the horn. IMO liking your horn is a very important attribute which aids you in spending more time practicing, which is the ultimate improvement factor in your playing ability - not the horn.

I purchased a Vintage 9 months ago. I selected it in a blind test against Lablanc's, Selmer Signature, and several other Buffet's (Prestige, R13, Festival, etc). Didn't like Lalanc's keys; Signature's stuffy tone, and other Buffet's whatever.
After 9 month's I still love my Vintage. It is free blowing and have a lovely tone. I use it for both Jazz and concert work. I use a slightly softer reed in Jazz work.
Buy one! You won't be disappointed. By the way the wood on my horn is beautiful. Lovely black/brown tight grain.
